A crack in the floor,a chasm in our lives
Good morning journal, the time is 8:26am,I am awake after spending a second night on the lounge floor.By way of explanation,I should start at the beginning;my wife,in her daily housekeeping duties, discovered that the carpet in our bedroom was wet to the touch. On further investigation, she discovered by rolling the carpet up,after emptying the room, there was a crack in the concrete floor running all the way across from one wall to the other. The weather has been pretty horrendous of late,we have had snow and heavy rain, and the water level had risen sufficiently to enter our bedroom without us being aware of it.As a result,we are now unable to use our bedroom until it has been dried out,my breathing problems,we assume, have not been helped greatly by sleeping in the damp conditions. The other main problem is that our home is rented,so now we have to contact our landlord through his realtor, which takes time,to see if he is willing to foot the bill for repairs, meanwhile,we are sleeping on the lounge floor on a mattress, and,as my back will testify,it isn't the dandiest arrangement!. There is also the matter of the expense to ourselves,we have a dehumidifier and a heater running twenty four hours a day in the bedroom in an attempt to dry it out, and,as we already know journal, money isn't exactly falling through our fingers here.Whoever is contracted to do the repairs is going to earn a considerable fee,it isn't going to be a case of just applying a skin of concrete to the floor, our rear garden is on an incline, and when it rains heavily,we get a build up of water around the rear wall of the house, high enough to invade the inside of shoes or boots, and we have noticed that the guttering above the door is broken, allowing heavy rainfall to pour out of the damaged section directly into a drain which seems to be damaged also. All in all,I think we can safely say,it isn't going to be a one day job,the other factor is time, our landlord is notoriously slow in responding to his realtor, and obviously the longer he takes, the greater the chance, given the British weather,of the same thing happening again, thus nullifying our efforts of the present, and I am concerned a little because, although my wife swims like a fish,I do not!,(my little attempt at humor there). We seem to encounter one thing after anotherbut,as always,my wife remains positive in the extreme, she has always wanted a home with a pool, admittedly not in the bedroom, but maybe the builders can move it a few yards into the rear garden for her before they leave, that would be nice. There is also the added bonus of the blossoming crop of mushrooms directly under the bedroom window, which leads us to believe that the wall on which they are cultivating, has also been badly damaged, life has a funny habit of throwing a little curve ball at you from time to time, don't you think?. Today,my wife and I are planning to do a little shopping,it will get us out of the house for a time, after stocking up on the necessary essentials for monthly survival, hopefully there will be enough left for a couple of snorkels, and maybe a flipper or two,(hey,if we don't laugh,we might both end up in the same padded room!). Anyway journal,I had better go for now,we have a lot to do today, and besides,we want to be out of here before the tide comes in,we could be marooned for days, must remember to put the life jackets on the fur children before we leave.Until tomorrow then, farewell from the crow's nest, plain sailing to both of us,and peace and dry feet walk with us both.
