A Course in Miracles is a comprehensive self-study spiritual thought system that teaches the student to undo guilt through forgiving others and to see everything as a divine opportunity for healing. It is an ecumenical, non-sectarian, and non-denominational spirituality that has been translated into more than 20 languages and has sold millions of copies around the world.

It is a three-volume curriculum consisting of a Text, Workbook for Students and Manual for Teachers. The Text and Workbook focus on the theory of the Course while the Manual for Teachers presents a method by which one can extend the Course's thought system to others in a manner that is effective and spiritually fulfilling.

The Course combines spiritual inspiration with deep psychological understanding of such phenomena as belief and defense systems, perception and identity. Its language is highly poetic and reflects the richness of human experience. It is a unique and intellectually sophisticated path that has inspired many to compare it to some of the world's great literature, while remaining unmistakably its own.

As a result, some aspects of A Course in Miracles are different in every edition published since the 1976 original. For example, the original manuscript underwent a series of editing processes by Helen Schucman and Bill Thetford, who were professors of medical psychology at Columbia University, in the years 1965-1972.

However, these editorial changes are not all the same, and there are some significant differences between the various editions that are sometimes confusing to students and teachers alike. For example, the original scribe's notes (URTEXT), which is the earliest version of the manuscript, contain a large number of typographical corrections and additions. The URTEXT is also the only edition to have paragraphs and sentences numbered to make it easier for students to refer to a quote or reference.

In fact, the URTEXT contains 53 principles of miracles compared to 50 in all other editions. It is interesting to note that the Sparkle Edition (the first version from the Foundation for Inner Peace [FIP]) does not contain any of these omissions or changes. In fact, this version is an early typing of the scribe's notes that was later augmented with further editing by Ken Wapnick and Robert Perry.
Workbook for Students

A Course in Miracles is a highly practical self-study program that has touched the lives of millions of people. Its teachings on forgiveness, love, and true peace are ecumenical in nature, making them appropriate for all religions and people with all levels of spiritual experience.

The Text and Workbook are written on a high intellectual level, with sophisticated metaphysical, theological, and psychological concepts integrated into the writing throughout both volumes. This might be intimidating to some readers who are not familiar with these areas, but it is not necessary to understand everything in order to benefit from the Course.

It is also important to realize that the ideas presented in the Text and Workbook are not for belief or acceptance, but for application. They may seem hard to believe, or quite startling, but the goal is not to convince you that they are true. Instead, the goal is to change your perceptions, which will lead to a spiritual transformation.

For example, the first lesson of the Workbook is "The Mind Is a Gift." It introduces an idea that some students find difficult to accept or even accept themselves: that the mind is a gift and a part of God's creative process. This is an idea that has been proven time and again, and it is the foundation for all of the other lessons in the Workbook.

Nevertheless, the Workbook is very much a training manual and the student must do a good job of applying the information provided by the Text and Workbook in order to make any progress in their transformation. The Introduction to the Workbook advises that students should not undertake more than one set of exercises per day, and that they should reread the Text occasionally in order to keep abreast of their progress.

In addition, the daily lessons in the Workbook can be enhanced by reading the corresponding "Lesson Insight" on the Pathways of Light website. These insights come from Pathways staff and from Course students worldwide.

A Course in Miracles is a challenging, but extremely rewarding, journey that can be undertaken at any age and stage of life. It is a powerful tool for bringing about a complete transformation in the mind and in the heart, enabling one to live a more authentic life in the presence of the divine.
Manual for Teachers

The Course in Miracles consists of three volumes: a Text, a Workbook for Students and a Manual for Teachers. Each volume has a different purpose: the Text teaches, the Workbook enables learning to happen and the Manual explains how to teach and guide others in the Course.

The Manual for Teachers is intended for "those pupils of the Course who have mastered its principles and are now ready to extend them to others." Its aim is to prepare teachers for a role that involves personal demonstration rather than just verbal reporting.

There are two forms of being a teacher, according to the Manual for Teachers: the "healer," and the "spiritual shepherd" (which is a Course in Miracles version of an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor). This healer or teacher is envisioned as going to people who are sick or who are struggling with some other problem in their lives and offering them forgiveness.

He is also envisioned as helping them to develop the spiritual principles of the Course, to accept these as a part of their lives and to live with these principles as a dominant thought-system.

Both of these forms of teaching are viewed as having a major influence on the Course and its overall mission: that of saving mankind from reincarnation, which is a major problem in our world today. It is a problem that can be vanquished through the teachings of the Course and its principle of forgiveness.

It is this very principle that gives a Course in Miracles teacher the ability to "defend" and "explain" to his pupil (and others) the Course, as well as "separate out the magic thought from the truth." That is, to respond to the thought so that it cannot make the student guilty or happy, but that the idea itself is unreal and not true.

This is not an easy task. To succeed in the task, the teacher must do so without denying his own spiritual growth or that of his pupils.

In fact, it is this very concept that is at the heart of the Manual for Teachers, as well as the broader Course in Miracles. The Course is a spiritual teaching that is nonsectarian and universal, and this Manual for Teachers attempts to clarify some of the fundamental tenets of its approach.
