The Workbook

The Workbook of the course in miracles is a practical step-by-step approach to releasing the mind from the ego thought system and limiting beliefs that hold us back from experiencing God's love. This is the path that will open your heart and lead you to a life of freedom, joy, and peace.

Anyone can benefit from studying A Course in Miracles, but it does require some intellectual ability to appreciate its sophisticated metaphysical, theological, and psychological concepts. The Text itself is written on a high intellectual level, and much of it is written in blank verse.

While the text does include many complicated concepts and is written on a very intellectual level, it is important to remember that the goal of the course is to teach the student how to think in ways that bring him or her closer to a true spiritual experience. It is impossible to accomplish this without training the mind.

It is this training that makes the theory of the Course meaningful and makes the exercises in the Workbook practical. This is why the Introduction to the text states that the "theoretical foundation" it provides "is necessary as a framework to make the exercises in this workbook meaningful."

The Manual for Teachers

The Manual for Teachers is an invaluable aid in guiding the teaching process. In the question-and-answer format, it provides responses to more likely questions, as well as clarifications of terms used throughout the Course in Miracles Text and Workbook for Students.

This manual was written for those who have chosen to change their direction away from the world's curriculum and teach another way of being, a way which reflects the Holy Spirit's curriculum. They have been given the gift of choosing this path and they are now responsible for directing that path to others, who will eventually make their own choices in accordance with the Holy Spirit's curriculum (Manual, p. 5; M-Intro.4:7-11).

Those who wish to become teachers of the Course in Miracles must mature enough on their own to be able to demonstrate what they have learned. The teacher must do this not only verbally, but also in a personal way.

But this is not a simple demonstration of the teacher's own beliefs; it must be a demonstration that is "real" rather than merely "verbal." It must show that the teacher is a healer, a healing practitioner, or in some other easily recognizable form. The teacher must avoid sympathizing with the magic thought, which can be concealed beneath a desire to help, or responding to it in a way that reinforces it.

The teacher must learn to keep the magic thought in check, by allowing the Holy Spirit to judge what he is saying and not making an interpretation of it that is not true. If he does not do this, the pupil will continue to doubt that he is a healer, resulting in a delay in physical healing.

This is not a simple matter, and it can be difficult to do well. The teacher must be very careful, for this is a very serious act of love. He must not attack the patient by insinuating that they are separate, and he must not give them a sense of guilt or blame for their illness.

The second form of the teacher of God is a healer, the Course in Miracles version of Christian Science or other spiritual healing practitioners. This teacher's mission is to offer those who are sick a chance to be healed by God's forgiveness. The patient's mind is the source of the illness, and the healer's responsibility is to remove the mental projections of sickness and replace them with the thoughts of healing (Manual, p. 42; M-17.1:1-2).
