Dear Fran
Once again this is late. I'm sorry. Maybe it's best just to not expect these to arrive on the day I said they would, but they'll arrive in the end. I've been in Italy for the past two weeks with my family. I'm writing this from where we're staying in Rome and I'm off to Strasbourg for five days leaving tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it but also feeling a little daunted by getting across Rome to the airport by myself, then flying to Basel and catching a train from there to Strasbourg. I wish I wasn't doing it all by myself but I guess it can't really be helped. I'm looking forward to Strasbourg. Italy has been really nice. The weather has been really hot and sunny. We started off in Naples, while there we went to Pompeii and had a look round the Roman ruins there. Mount Vesuvius is huge and it's incredible how the volcano fell in on itself after the eruption. After that we went to a villa where we stayed for the bulk of the holiday, ten days in total. It was nice, the weather was hot and sunny for all but about three of the days where it rained. There was a pool where we were staying and it was really secluded and lovely. It was near the east coast near Fermo though everything around there is quite small and difficult to find on a map. We were staying near a village in the hills and spent most of our time going to other villages in the hills. After that we went to Rome and here I am now. We've just been sightseeing and doing a lot of walking. The kind of stuff you do on family holidays, though it's really nice and we've found a really good gelateria.
Before that the past month hasn't really had a lot going on apart from the week I went camping. I've been stuck at home getting really scratchy at just about everyone or talking to Nick or Roy. Everyone else is out doing stuff and aren't really around to talk, which sucks a bit but it's alright in the end I guess. One of my close friends from uni is off to Hong Kong in about a week and I'm not really sure how I feel about that. He's going to the uni there for his third year. He's one of the people I bring my problems to so it's probably going to suck a bit without him. He's also the source of a lot of gossip so thing's will probably get a lot less interesting when he's gone too. It's going to be sad and I know a lot of people who are really going to miss him, myself included, but it's only for a year and he'll be back soon enough so I'm wishing him all the best with it.
Camping was really good though. We went to a campsite near Frome for five days where we did much as you'd expect. A lot of sitting around in the sun having barbecues and getting sunburnt. We drank a lot of cider and had a bonfire every night. It was really fun. Someone brought sparklers so we ran around with them in the black of night round the campsite. The field was empty though and we were the only ones camping there that night so it wasn't too dangerous, apart from the whole burning ourselves thing, but none of us did in the end so it all worked out fine in the end I guess. We also went on a day trip to Bath and a day trip to Weymouth. When we went to Bath I got to see one of my old housemates who lives there which was awesome. I'm only seeing her once more before she goes off on her year abroad and she's got a job so she's never on facebook. I was good to catch up with her for a bit. It was sunny and Bath is really pretty. It was a great day out. Weymouth was nice too, the beach was pretty rocky and one of the people we were with had left that day so there was only for of us. It was quite funny because we were mistaken for couples when we ordered lunch in a cafe so we all laughed and didn't bother correcting him. The girl who left went back to London to meet a guy she really likes and now they're going out with each other, which is awesome, even if we've been expecting it for about six months now. After that we all went back to our respective homes and slept for about a day solidly. It was all really good fun.
Another thing that happened which is quite weird is that my sister's boyfriend lives pretty much opposite one of my closest friends who I'm living with next year so I've been seeing her quite a lot. Every time my sister goes off to see her boyfriend I get a lift in the car too to see her for a bit. All in all it works quite well.
I read your most recent entry, I know I said I wouldn't read them any more and I'm sorry but... if I can help, if you want to say anything to me, if it would help you to send something to me and know that it reached me. I guess you wouldn't be crying about me if I wasn't involved and I also guess that you've probably written letters to me that you never intend to send, but if there's anything you do want to send or at least you just want to tell me what I've done or make a request or anything.
