After reading a friends journal, I noticed a comment that one of her 'friends' had made in refernce to her entry. Basically, and I'm paraphrasing, she said that my friend was not in fact bipolar but hormonal instead. That she should accept herself as 'normal' and that everybody suffers from time to time and has bad days. As a mental Health Advocate that encourages people to come out of the closet in regards to their Mental Health diagnoseez, I take strong objection to these comments. I'm a firm believer in FREEDOM OF SPEACH but this a topic that I need to comment on in regard to her opinion. I have been told for the last 15 years that I should smell the roses and that simply put 'get over it'. It is time for people with Mental Health disABILITIES to educate those around them that their diagnosis is real and that the impact of their illnesses have drastically taken a toll on their successess in life. WE should be accepted as people who are JUST AS NORMAL as everyone else but have major health concerns, just as those with for example crippling arthritis or diabetis. WE are refused Disability Assistance, proper Health Care, and understanding from family members, and significant others, etc., because they too believe that we are merely holding on too tight and unwilling to move on. A chemical imbalance is REAL. There is no other ways of putting it. Naturopathic beliefs are in most cases a breath of fresh air and a step in the right direction, but not if it means belittling major imbalances like manic depression and schizophrenia as examples.I'm all for differences in opinion, but not to that great an extent in this particular case. Although I believe her comments were said without malice, they infuriated me quite frankly , and I felt it necessary to write this in retalliation...YOUR opinions on this subject are welcome. Please feel free to comment. As this is my third attempt at writing this, as both previous ones were deleted when I requested they be saved (?), it has added fuel to the fire I'm already feeling inside right now. After reading a friends journal, I noticed a comment that one of her 'friends' had made in refernce to her entry. WOW! WOW! WOW!
First it of all, let me tell you that I sense your frustration (anger) towards that comment. It\'s a bit frustrating when people do not acknowledge my condition. I look as normal as anyone else that doesn\'t suffer from any mental condition. Maybe that\'s why is so hard for people to understand what I go though. I also get very irritated when people compare us with diabetic patients because if a diabetic patients goes to court, their illness is not an issue; on the other hand, bipolar we always have to be on guard that they might use our conditions to put us down. I totally agree that a chemical imbalance is REAL, there is no other way to explain why I feel the way I do. I know what I went through with my psychoatic episode. I know what I saw and what I hear, maybe being brave and open about this would bring hope and awareness to others. I am afraid of people knowing my name and finding out that I had hallucinations, that\'s the main reason why I take my meds, so I won\'t go back to that horrific place. I have to renounce to many things, one of them to be a mom, but I also believe that being bipolar has brought me many gratifications: YOU ARE ONE OF THOSE. It feels good to know that someone out there understand and it\'s willing to go the EXTRA mile to voice his opinion. As far as friend, that\'s l ife hon, some people will get it, and for others the pain is so unberable that they make excuses or maybe they haven\'t felt close to home.
I love you so much
Claudia
you have been able to express how I feel and what I get a lot from my own husband..Excatly what you said..\"snap out of it\" get a grip..it\'s not that serious..I dunno..I was saying today during a personal crisis..to my husband who told me to just \'relax\' YOU CAN RELAX..I am bipolar I do not relax..I act then think..i do not think the way you would or do..this is me..I cannot think like you..I don\'t think like you..I am me not you..please just try to understand and don\'t tell me to relax..don\'t tell me to \'snap out of it\' when in a depressed state..just accept and try to support and help..I know there is a book out called I hate you don\'t leave me..i have not read this yet..but I feel like that so often..
Let your Voice be heard...
Roscoe-touch\'e (wherever the \' should be!). Yes. BIPOLAR IS A REAL DISEASE!!! Let\'s analyze this...if someone had diabetes, or heart disease or whatever, they should not be considered \"NORMAL\", as one person suggested in the dialogue? What is normal? That is really a subjective OPINION, not FACT. BEING BIPOLAR IS A FACT, NOT AN OPINION!!!! Scientific studies have shown this. Anyone that thinks otherwise, in my OPINION, is not NORMAL. Accept it for what it is. Hormonal? Whatever. Could be. But could also be bipolar. I don\'t think the terminology matters as much as FRIENDS NEED TO SUPPORT FRIENDS! Right on, Roscoe. Keep up the good work!
Thank you Roscoe for standing up for the rights of people such as ourselves. I agree that there is no time like the present to address these concerns. I am so tired of hearing that I am completely full of myself and should get off my high horse. I am tired of hearing that if I don\'t \"get over it\" then I am destroying my life. AHHHH! I wish people could just open their ear and hear the real truth about mental illness. I have worked with many individuals over the years that have varies mental illness and you would think they have the plague by the way they have been treated. I just don\'t get it. You know, if this country continues to act like they do about mental illness, we are just going to be afraid of nearly everyone (pdoc\'s are the longest doctor waiting list). Again, thanks for taking a stand!
