Another BUZY PUPPY DAY!(pups can't spell) We started our day with a nice brisk walk of the field, 3 laps worth which is about 1 mile. Walking the field is kind of like walking on a sponge right now as we've had rain and all the snow has melted. Now the pups are taking their mid-morning nappypoos which allows me to mess around on here a bit. We had a great weekend and took part in the Cornell University Bird Watch early Saturday afternoon. I'm so glad I did it Saturday because the sun was out even though we had snow on the ground. The feeders were very busy, that's for sure! I even spotted a new woodpecker, a Northern Flicker--looks like a Red Bellied, but instead of the red tint, it has spots on his belly--pretty cool! This was a great find that pairs nicely with the Pileated Woodpecker I finally spotted earlier in the week. Guy pointed him out when we were driving up the driveway--all I can say is HUGEWAG!!! so and beautiful! I swear, the birds eat me out of house and home with 2 suet feeders, 2 mixed feeders (regular feed mixed with extra sunflower seeds), a thistle seed feeder, and a small feeder as well. Guy is off walking "his fields" in search of arrowheads (local farmer's corn/soybean fields--acres upon acres). He did pretty well last week finding 4 perfect ones along with a bunch of broken ones. Certainly, the search for Indian artifacts is a great passion of his, and I love it because it gives me my much adored alone time. It's not quite as good as when he goes north to work, but in the middle of the winter, I take what I can get. I need to be thinking about going to town though I'm putting it off as long as I can. One more tight winter month, and we should be back to smooth sailing. Really, I can't complain as I have absolutely everything that I need. I'm pretty well stocked except for milk, eggs, and bread. Soon, I'm hoping to start a flock of chickens which will solve the egg deficit anyway. I need to broach that subject again with Guy as he will need to build a chicken coop. I need to do some more research on "free ranging" as the chicken will have the peck of the yard. Just think--I'll have a new evil way to rid myself of garden slugs and hornworms! Contrary to popular belief, chickens are not vegetarians and love their bugs, worms, and beetles! Ah, just think, it will be more like a real farm! I can't wait!

I wanted to raise some chickens for the eggs, too. But it\'s just hard to enjoy the eggs after the chickens have roamed the yard, eating all those bugs. Also, you got to remember the pups. Will they chase the chickens? Do you seriously mean chickens won\'t wreck a garden? I know they won\'t leave mulch on a red dirt bank, but that\'s a chicken for you, always scratching and looking for a bug! Best of luck! :) What kind of chickens are you going to get?
Cj, it sounds like you all had a wonderful day! :) The bird watching event sounds very nice. i\'d love to attend one of those! i love watching birds, they are so cute, and adorable! especially birds during the summer that hang out near the bird bath, as they wash their feathers, it\'s wonderful beauty of nature. :)
my dad has always wanted to get some chickens. The local farm owners here, have chickens, and get fresh eggs, and sometimes they order pizza from where my dad works, and he delivers pizza to them, and sometimes they give him a dozen eggs as a tip, and he sometimes purchases some eggs from them. they own a local farm/produce stand here, and we buy lots of gardening plants from them each spring. :)
i hope Guy had great lucky, finding arrowheads! :) That\'s a nice hobby he has, and of course, must be so very fun, looking for them. :)

What a great weekend you had poking around your farm. Unfortunately, we have so much snow that I\'m unable to get to my feeders. We lost a lot with heavy rains yesterday but still have a good 3 1/2 feet left on the ground. My poor birdies have to scramble elsewhere to be feed. I have seen a Pileated Woodpecker, once. They are HUGE!!!
WOW! Chickens! My neighbor down the road has them on her farm and they\'re too messy and noisy (rooster) for my taste. I\'d rather buy eggs than put up with them. Guess you\'re more of a country farm girl than me!! A wonderful way to be.
I\'m intrigued by Guy looking for Indian artifacts. What a fascinating hobby. Has he found lots of stuff?

Oh CJ I wish we were neighbors!! I too am wanting some chickens this year. We been talkng about the same thing...free ranging. I hear that you have to keep them pent up for about three weeks or so then you can start letting them out. At night they will return to the coop, they should lay in the coop also (I hope). Yea they are wonderful for bugs and such. I use to raise chickens years ago along with rabbits. We\'ve also talked about getting a buck and doe for raising meat. I use to love tame rabbit, wild is a little strong for me now days.
I would also love to walk the fields with Guy. I just love arrowhead hunting. There are a few fields around me that I walk. I found some beads and chipped arrowheads. Found some small grinding stones. Funny story, you will have to tell Guy. My husband went deer hunting one year by hisself just out the road. It was bow season and he had a crossbow. Well that morning he shot a big buck and he got the jump on Bob. He was having a hard time tracking him so he came back home and picked me up. I love to track and I\'m really good at it. Bob has a hard time seeing colors, so here we go walking across this field, me just a tracking. We walked and walked, then suddenly I stopped and just looked across the field aways. I told Bob to stay there so we wouldn\'t lose the tracks and I took off across the field. When I got to the spot I bent over and picked up the most beautiful pink colored arrowhead. Bob still talks about that to this day. Needless to say the deer crossed over into someother peoples property and they claimed it. My dad started me off hunting arrowheads when I was probably five or so. We would take a break from cutting wood and take a walk through the fields.
Hey thanks for your comments onn my pottery. I was so tickled when I read your post. This is the only one I\'ve made. Mom just gave me a hunk of clay and that is what came out of it. People laugh cause I always ask the clay what it wants to be. LOL I know....I\'m crazy! Well any way I was learning that you can wrap clay around a paper cylinder. Cool! So that is how the house came to be. I hand built the roof, I wanted it to look like a hat sort of. The treasure chest will have a air tube that runs up under it and I poked little holes in it to dispense the air. I\'ll have to take a picture of my arched bridge. Mom is dying for me to come down and get on the wheel. I really like the hand building better though.

My husband raised chickens before we were married, he said he loved his chicks. They are very entertaining and alot of work, especially the POO. Love Ya Pam
Wish I had the eye site to pick out a bird in a tree. I go places with friends and they say oh look a hawk on that branch every one but me has spoted it rite away. And I must look like one of your chickens head poping around searching the trees for the dam bird until one of them points for me and then I will find it.
Chicken wire that what they use that stuff for to keep the chickens from going every where and I though it was for keeping rabbits out of my garden. LOL
I don\'t think neighbors or village would take kindly a coupe of chickens but it sure be nice just to piss of S###H*** next door.

Unfortunetly I didn\'t grow up on a farm. I\'m a city girl. When I lived in N. California for few years, we had an awesome house right in the middle of woods close to lake Tahoe. It was so beautiful. I would always go hiking on the long trails we had, over 6 miles. Sometime we would see mountain lions, deer, and bears. Scary, but beautiful. Lol. I sure miss that house, the woods, lakes, trails, and mountains. . .
Anyways...
sounds like i really need to get educated on the birds you\'re talking about so much, \'cause I have no clue which ones they are- lol.
