1989 - The year my brother died and entered the spirit world where he still supports me today.  He died of Duchenne's Muscular Dystrophy and lived half of his short 22 yr. old life in a wheelchair and the last year on a respirator...1989 - I was married, 287 1/2 pounds, traveled for my job, and most importantly, the Indigo Girls released their first self-titled CD.  This was the CD I listened to on my way to my brother's furneral (as I recall, I got a speeding ticket on the way--the officer didn't care that I had been crying or why...).I write this here because as I was reading postings on this site, one of the songs from that Indigo Girls CD sprang into my head.  It took me some time to figure out which CD it was from (since I have almost all that they've released--think there is a new one out I still need).  So, here it is and why I gave you a brief history of how it fits in my live.  BTW, I'm now at just a bit above what my normal weight should be (thankfully, I lost 150 pounds before my MS diagnosis).Closer to Fine   by Emily SaliersI'm trying to tell you something about my lifeMaybe give me insight between black and whiteThe best thing you've ever done for meIs to help me take my life less seriously, it's only life afterall.Well darkness has a hunger that's insatiableAnd lightness has a call that's hard to hearI wrap my fear around me like a blanketI sailed my ship of safety till I sank it, I'm crawling on your shore.ChorusI went to the doctor, I went to the mountainsI looked to the children, I drank from the fountainThere's more that one answer to these questions pointing me in a crooked lineThe less I seek my source for some definitiveThe closer I am to fineThe song continues for 3 more stanzas, the first about attending college to be graded by "the doctor of philosophy" until "she got her paper/And I was free", the second about stopping at the bar in the middle of the night trying to find the answers in a bottle of beer until she woke up with a hangover "Twice as clouded as I was before / I went in seeking clarity", and the third is about going to the Bible and a revival for the answers where she sings "There's more than one answer to these questions pointing me in a crooked line / The less I seek the source for some definitive / The closer I am to fine". All I can say is that these two women have followed my life since 1989 with their music constantly reflecting what I'm going through.  They've seen me through my MS diagnosis and subsequent post-MS diagnosis divorce, they've seen me through 4 years of crazy bar hopping and dancing like there was no tomorrow, they've seen me leave the marriage architype and enter the partnership architype with a much better suited partner (thank you, Goddess, for matching me with a much better!).The most important thing I get from this Daily Strength site is a sounding board that has me writing again and people with whom to communicate whenever.  This is especially important because I spend so much time alone on my farm as my partner works 2 hours away and is only home on weekends.I guess I've written all this to remind us all to be a little less serious because "it's only life afterall" and none of us gets out alive.  And, of course, the very happy "smiley pace" (that's for Ben) always tells you all how I am because I refuse to be sad for very long--life is just too damn short!

CJ...That\'s so weird...that\'s the one song I can listen to over and over. When I saw that you wrote that I got chills. I never related it to my situation as it is now because like you, they have been with me so long, kind of background music, but it takes on a whole new meaning. Thank you.-Jen

Cj, Thank you for sharing more of your life. I guess I\'m too old for the Indigo Girls (although I do know the name) as I don\'t know their music. However....
I am so sorry that you lost your brother. It must have been so hard especially since he was so young. May he be resting in peace and seeing meadows of flowers.
hugs, Marti
