Weight Loss: What do you tell yourself about weight loss.
The number one negative message I tell myself.
I am scared to try because I am scared to fail yet again.
Goal for today.
Start working on changing the negative messages I tell myself.
I'm not ready for 60 to 90 minutes of walking. This is my first day and I'm still trying to get past the negative messages I tell myself and to find positive messages.
I am not asking for a gift of losing weight. I know its going to take work. I am working right now on breathing deep, getting past my disappointment in myself and feelings of failure to find a more positive and willing spirit. I want to share my thoughts hopefully to encourage others and myself so I am writing this in my journal.
I saw this statement and decided to adopt it.
The Only Way To Get Lasting Weight Loss Is To Get Determined To Make It Happen.
I’m working on getting my mind to the place where I can do this. I can make this happen. I quit smoking and I’ve heard that is as hard as quitting drugs. I don’t know about quitting drugs as I’ve never been a drug addict.
I quit smoking twice. I quit the first time in June of 1991. I started smoking while working in a very stressful position in 1997. I was so uncomfortable that I wouldn’t even take a break. I noticed a lot of the other employees smoked and took breaks to smoke. Wanting a bit of rest from the strain of the atmosphere, from being hunched over a keyboard and reading client records almost non stop, plus I think looking for some kind of common ground I started going out for a smoke 2-3 times during the work day and soon I was smoking a pack a day.
I quit for the second time 1/6/2010. It took several years and lots of ‘wishing’ I could quit. I don’t feel like the ‘wishing’ time was totally wasted but I am glad I moved from ‘wishing’ to doing. The steps I took to quit smoking the second time: I cut down on the number of cigarettes I smoked per day. I finally worked myself down to 4-5 cigarettes a day, but I was smoking ½ cigarette at a time so I was still lighting up 8 to 10 times a day. When you go longer periods between cigarettes when you do light up the effect is extremely strong. Its almost unpleasant but still the addiction pulls.
The next step I took was that I contacted 1-800-QUIT-NOW. I talked to a counselor there who sent me literature on how to quit smoking and counseled me as well on taking positive steps to quit. The literature wasn’t for me particularly pertinent as I’d been reading similar stuff for years. What did seem to work better for me was making lists of the pros and cons for and against smoking. There weren’t many pros. I repeated the lists and the reinforcement of talking to myself about my reasons for wanting to quit smoking. After about 2 months my mentor asked if I was ready to set a quit date. I set my quit date about 1 week ahead to 1/10/2008. I kept working on getting ready to be a non smoker. On Sunday 1/6/2008 I was out of cigarettes. I planned on going to buy 1 pack of cigarettes and smoking 5 cigarettes a day and quitting as planned 1/10/2008. Then I thought to myself; if I’m going to quit, today is as good as waiting till the 10th. I believe the mind work and cutting down on the number of cigarettes helped make it possible.
To this day I can smell a cigarette, a cigar, or even the smell of a log fire and feel the yearning to smoke. I don’t allow myself to play with taking even a single drag off a cigarette.
When they made marijuana legal I joked with my husband about moving to Colorado so I could smoke marijuana. I haven’t smoked marijuana but twice in my life. The first time I doubt it was even marijuana because I felt nothing. The second time though I have to say it was so very relaxing. If it hadn’t have been for the fact it was illegal and I worried about brain cell damage and other possible negative consequences I would have been strongly tempted to keep using.  I almost immediately told myself... well smoking marijuana is another one of those things you're going to stay away for.  There is no way I want to give myself back over to smoking anything again.

I’ve been a food addict most of my life. I’m tired of being fat and unhealthy.  I am going to work to keep myself committed to this program.  I think many programs could work if I'd follow through.  So today I write this journal to encourage me to follow through.  Thanks Leda.  I feel encouraged.  Hopefully we can encourage each other and others.

Elissa, you could not have picked a better day, for me to read this journal!! I have been so deeply depressed and part of it is being so fat!! I am going to put myself back on \"My fitness pal\" and start counting calories again. Maybe, we can encourage each other. I know I would not be able to follow the strict diet plan, that Leda is on. Howeveer, counting calories on my fitness pal is just like counting points on weight watchers and it is free. If you have not checked out my fitness pal, give it a look and see what you think.
I am going to have to put in a few diet foods, like cottage cheese, fat free cheese, etc. I hope to start my diet on Tuesday. I will then weigh myself once a week, to see how I am doing. Join me!!! Together, we can do this. Then you and Richard can find me a new man, lol...

Walked yesterday, hoping to walk again, today. Take my pain meds and the dog, my cane and a leash, and go to the end of the block. My neighbor is giving away a free, barcolounger, so I can sit and rest for a while on her driveway. Great! We will support one another. Eat only what is good, and then, leave half.

I have been chubby all my life and I quit smoking cold turkey. I finished a pack one evening and never bought another - that was in 1975. I had quit once before and you are right. I went out and bought a pack and smoked for another 10 years.
As for dieting. I was once told by a doctor that he had lost 20 pounds. I told him that I had too - several times. I have come to terms with the fact that I will always be overweight. But that does not mean that I need to be unhealthy. I try to eat healthy food and exercise. I have to push myself at times to stay on the healthy path. I falter and backslide but it neither means that I am a failure or a bad or weak person. I tell myself that tomorrow will be a better day.
Having said all that, it is different strokes for different folks. Whatever works is what you need to do. All I ask is that you are not hard on yourself. The problem with food addiction, and I believe I am a food addict, is harder to beat than either cigarettes or drugs. You can quit smoking; you can quit taking drugs, but you can\'t quit eating. We eat for many reasons, and most of them have nothing to do with hunger.
Oh my gosh, I am being preachy again. It is an issue that really gets to me in view of the fact that Lisa died as a result of surgery to lose weight. She was trying to get healthy.
So my dear friend, I am rooting for you!!
Love and tight hugs,
Marlene

How wonderful you have quit smoking. You have done the most beautiful thing for your lungs. They are getting pink again. Such a blessing.
I am with you and all our other sisters on this problem of food. It would be great if we could just take a pill. HAHA. I think I will go for a walk and do some gardening before work. Is that a sign today will be the start of healthy eating, I hope so. Good luck to all of us on this journey. Peace, Kathy

Elissa, I hear you..I started just making my portions a tiny bit smaller and getting up off the couch myself instead of saying to people, \" hey while you are up...\" Lolol I still slip into that and have to catch myself. Now I stay up a little more each day just moving...it is hard to get back in the habit of not putting myself on the sofa and vegetating. I let myself do it one day a week. It is the motivation that is the hardest...you can do this..little goals are so much easier to handle. I will be praying for you..Love Lauri

Just finished my journal a bit ago. I had to feed the dogs before I came back. Good for you on quitting smoking!!! Sweet gal, the reason you are reacting to all that smoke that way is because the world is soooo TOXIC. We are full of toxins. I reacted the same way until I saw my Natural Allergy Elimination Treatment doctor. Yes, it is another research thing of mine. We are trying hard to save money for retirement so only about $50 for doctor treatments a couple times a month. I will need to eliminate toxins and continue to change my digestion to help my gut bugs florish and reduce my allergies some more. (See journal.) Love ya!
