We had another meeting with our early interventionist. She seemed encouraged ay my son's progress. His vocabulary has increased quite a bit. But the vocab. that has increased is mainly naming/labeling objects. His requesting things and expressing emotions isn't coming along as fast. He does request a few things with his PECS cards, but verbally requesting things is virtually non-existent. I'm continuing with the PECS cards because that seems to be working.

I don't know what to do about getting him to initiate talking or activities. He doesn't seem to initiate much, but when I do, he is very much into the activity. I just wish he would start initiating things. I haven't really had much of a chance to get him out to public play areas. Bad weather on my days off has prevented that.

His line following isn't getting much better. Actually, it seems to be getting a little worse/more frequent. I have had building contractors in my house for the past two weeks working in the basement (finishing project, HUGE playroom for my son). I'm thinking the line following is stimming to help him deal with the change of situation and additional noise/commotion. I continue to redirect, which he responds to well. But when the activity I redirect him to is over, he's right back to following lines. And he's finding mores lines to follow with his eyes.

Overall, the past week or so has had its ups and downs. I'm encouraged by the early interventionist's visit. She seemed encouraged by my son's progress. This really makes me glad we started his intervention as early as we did. THIS IS KEY! I guess the ups and downs are all a part of being a parent to a special needs child. I still new to this, and I'm still learning about what it takes, and what it takes seems to frequently change. I just didn't realize the roller coaster of emotions would be like this, and I'm sometimes at a loss on how to deal with these emotions.

What doesn't change is my devotion to my son. He is such a pleasure to be with, in whatever form that may be. He makes it very easy for me to love him. I am very proud of the things he is able to do and is learning to do. Every little new thing gives me more and more hope for our future together.

I think it is great that he is labeling and naming. I think that is a great start! It is a roller coaster of emotions. I think your love for him is truly the key. What more could a kid want then a father to love him and be his advocate. He will want to be like Daddy and want a great roll model you are for your son.
