I was at my wife's Uncle's house this past Saturday, and I think my son must have been overstimulated. I have seen him overstimulated before but just not in an unfamiliar place. I have never seen him isolate himself like he did. There was a bird in a bird cage, and that was the only thing he wanted to do, and he had to have me hold him or sit in my lap. He just kept repeating, "Baby Bird, tweet," over and over again. He would look at me and smile when saying this, which made me feel a little better. But if anybody else (his mother included) tried to hold him and show him the bird, he would have none of it. Although I felt a little flattered that my son wanted to be with me so much, I also worried a little because of it. Like I said, I had never seen him withdraw so much, and I wasn't quite sure what to do so I sat with him in front of the bird cage for a long time.

He has also started dong something else. One way he has always shown me that he wants something is by taking me by my hand and taking me where the thing is. He still does that a little, but now he makes me take his hand and just stands there.

Overall, it was a good weekend. My son and I got to play together alot, and I loved every minute of it. I take his favorite game (bowling, he is obsessed with it) and use it as a teaching tool. He gets to knock down the pins one time, then he has to get his PECS card and give it to me and then read a book, say the aplhabet, count, etc. Then he gets to knock down the pins again. Sometimes, I sneak a kiss or hug in there!!! Now, my son says, "Oh hugs," when he gives me a hug. He is such a joy!

Possibly he already established a \"safe place\" in your lap watching the bird, and changing to another person would have messed with that, as he was in an unfamiliar place and needed consistancy.

He just takes your hand as if he\'s going to show you something, but instead doesn\'t move, he just stands there holding your hand? Is that what you are saying? I\'m not sure how to interpret... he could be trying to show you something you aren\'t seeing (because he can\'t figure out how to communicate it well) - does he get frustrated when he does this? If he doesn\'t, maybe he just wants to hold your hand? It\'s so hard, I know...but one plus is you become really great at interpreting other people\'s body language.
