A friend of a friend has a real issue, not sure what to call it...
When one of 'us' (about 24 friends of various closeness) has an illness, she 'gets' it too. Ditto: promotions at work, new jewelry, new cars, new houses. She is sooooo overextended on credit, we have a secret pool for how long a new object will last before it is reposessed. Gone are: Cars, TVs, Jewelry, etc.
We had an impromptu party to watch the big screen TV she 'paid cash for' being hauled off by Rent-A-Center. She didn't even blink when we asked about how she 'paid cash' but got repo-ed.
What the hell?
Is this Munchaussen's?
There are times it just drives me crazy.
I told my pals, "If you tell her anything about me, I'll hurt you."

I think your friend is a shopaholic. I think shopaholics have this problem with the need for instant gratification. When they are upset/lonely/depressed/angry instead of using positive coping skills they go shop and they buy anything to make them feel better/feel like they have power etc. Things make them feel good for the moment. I always get panicked when I hear someone racking up their credit cards because I know that it will take forever to get caught up.

Hmmmmm. That doesn\'t account for how she lies about being promoted.
this is \"keeping up with the Jones\'\" to a pathatlogical degree. She must feel really bad about herself that she only feels better if she is on equal footing, except you can\'t do that with 24 other people, because everyone is in a different place, has different needs/careers/goals/money,etc. any way to convince her she needs help?
Ho ho ho. Her? Need help?
No way! She \'has\' cancer, bi-polar, PTSD, depression, been raped, killed, tortured, you name it. The hospitals turn her away now. The ER has a restraining order against her.
She sounds like somebody who has a very deep need for attention, yet doesn\'t know healthy ways of getting the attention she needs. She wants to be close to people and \"belong\", but doesn\'t really know how. I had a friend like this once. She only wanted friends but she ended up driving them all away from her. No one could tolerate all the lies.
Sounds as if she has a deep longing to belong..The radical shopping is a sign of low self worth, always trying to impress others with her goods, always trying to keep up in order to look good in the eyes of her peers. She needs to be told to live within her own budget, and stop trying to compete with her friends. Hell if she wishes to compete tell her to go join a organization where she may be able to win and not the approval of others but of her herself. Sounds as if she has a serious indentity problem.
just seen one of your poems on a friends board and wanted to tell you it was very good...deborah

just sounds like she\'s just a plain old pathological liar (with extreme ADD i\'d say from the impulsivity).
It\'s called addiction.
