Wilma and I paid a visit to the vet this morning. Two of Wilma's legs are quite swollen plus she's off her food and her breathing appears laboured. Wilma is actually diabetic and the vet said that the swelling is blood 'pooling' which is also affecting her chest. As a result her heart is enlarged and is struggling to cope as the diabetes has taken its toll on her circulation.Wilma was given a shot of diuretic to try and clear the fluid and I have a pill to feed to her shortly, however the vet has said that it doesn't look good and that I need to start thinking about saying goodbye to my friend of 22 years. It seems that maybe we only have a few days left together. All I can do is to make her as comfortable as possible and make sure she doesn't suffer in any way.I don't want to be sad. I really don't want to be sad, but it's hard not to see it as a loss. What would Wilma say if she could talk? I'm sure she'd be relaxed and say "don't fret, it happens to us all some day, just think about the good times" and yes it's been a fun time sharing a house with Wilma. Sure we've had not so great days - like why would anyone other than a cat think that a dismembered frog on the doorstep is actually a gift?! I feel that something positive must come out of this. I just don't know what it is yet. I just hope that both now and when she's gone, she knows that I've always been there for her.

I know how you are feeling I have never gotten over the loss of my first dog. It is hard to watch them get old. Think of the time she has been in your life as you said think about the good times.
