about 10 minutes ago, my wife and i were watching "Brothers & Sisters", a show that i really don't care much for, but it provides me with an excuse to sit next to my wife, and, well, do nothing. which i like.
that's when i heard it. a "thud".
i thought one of the following:
1) our nanny was trapped under something heavy
2) an asteroid had hit our house
3) an uncooked steak had jumped out of our fridge and hit the ground
it didn't occur to me that it might be anything else.
i thought i'd take a walk around the house...and then i thought i'd start with my son's room. my son is also, coincidentally, the recipient of an awesome new bunk bed. he sleeps on the bottom bunk, and kaya sometimes sleeps on the top. it's kinda cool - the bottom bunk is a queen size bed, while the top is smaller...so both kids get a treat.
anyway, i digress...so you'll remember i had heard a "thump". or a "thud". take your pick. they kinda sound alike?
i opened the door, turned the light in the bathroom on so i could see a bit, and then i saw my son, asleep in a fetal position....on the ground. he had rolled right out of bed, thudded to the rug, and kept right on sleeping, peaceful as a clam. he even had his blankie.
i started laughing. then i realized "oh shit, he could really be hurt", so i made sure he was breathing. and then i started laughing again, to the point where i almost woke him up. then i went in our room and told cho, whom i expected to freak out and go check on her precious son.
she started laughing, too.
fyi, grandma, he's fine and now back in bed, far away from the edge.

O.k. so maybe the gaurd rail isn\'t such a bad idea?? We heard many a thuds when first took the gaurd rail off of Abby\'s bed. Happily they all figure out how to remain aloft and amazingly they usually sleep peacefully through the whole experience. Sweet dreams to all of you. C
What a precious little thing.
My son when he was just 2 or 3, would get out of his bunk bed and lay on the floor so he could look out the crack under his door. We often would find him with his hand sticking our or his nose. The gap under the door was about 2 inches. Pretty large one. He was soo cute.
I had to have my father in law make Kinzie\'s bed...... I loved some in a catelog, but I thought, there is no way, she rolls too much! He made it with wooden railing, with a gap for her to climb out in the middle! Yes there were many nights that she would just throw herself out and keep on sleeping! Glad he was okay!
Lollie
I remember waking up from a nap in my cool bunk bed (must have been about 8) suspended about a foot off the ground in a blanket-hammock. I had rolled out of bed but my mom had done such a great job of tucking me in that the blankets stayed tucked in and I didn\'t \'thud\'. I love my mom.
OK So my heart was thumping as I was reading this post. Here\'s the difference between grandparents and parents. Grandparents hold their breath alot and issue warnings, and parents either laugh or say \"oops\".
Oh, to be young again. So happy my adorable little guy is just fine.
Made me laugh. When my son first started sleeping in his own bed, he\'d routinely fall out. BOOM! I\'d run upstairs terrified and he\'d be back in bed asleep as though nothing happened! Amazing!
