hey friends.
first of all, you may all be scratching your heads and wondering who this "DJH" character is. it's me, DOUG, but i changed my username to DJH. (this is not an available feature to users, and is reserved only for, well, people who know how to butter up our engineering team.)
I changed to DJH because I wanted to make sure that every new member to DailyStrength has at least one friend from the second they join, and that is going to be DOUG. I'm going to use DJH for my personal stuff (my weight and family stuff, etc). I didn't want to use DOUG for too much of my personal stuff because that would mean thousands of people get an email everytime I lose (or gain) a few pounds, and I just don't think I'm THAT fascinating.
If that all confused you, don't worry about it...just know that DJH is the guy with the weight issues, while Doug is the "face" of DailyStrength, and they're all the same guy.
So, speaking of weight, I'm back up in the 180-ish range. Had a great moment of 178-ness on Friday after a big hike with the wife, but this weekend, was err, pizza and cookie-filled.
I'm travelling this coming week, so exercise may be sporadic, at best.
Tonight, I wanted to blog about family and friends. I had the pleasure today of going to a benefit for our public elementary school, which we're currently debating attending (in Los Angeles, there's often a debate about public vs. private). Anyway, this was no ordinary elementary school fair, as both The English Beat and Jackson Browne were playing on the soccer field. In my hometown, we were lucky to get a juggler and the local drunk made up as a clown. But I digress.
Anyway, somewhere in the middle of the music, I looked around and realized that despite my claims to the contrary, I do live in a community, and I'm surrounded by some really genuine and good people. We were all hanging out, listening to music, picnicing with our kids, and I suddenly felt a bit less alone in this impersonal city, and felt that camraderie that I haven't recalled since my small-town days. It was a good thing.
Anyway, it's late, and I'm heading to sleep. Hope y'all are well.

nice to hear that there are good times and people in cities, i feel very alienated right now in SF and im sure that will change once my attitude and friends change. time to get with some good groups... thanks for this post, it made me feel hopeful. celeste
