OK, so that sounds good, but in reality, this dieting thing is hard...really hard. What I've realized is that you have to be paying attention at all times, as a single moment of weakness can basically destroy a day's worth of healthy eating and exercise.

As an example, I went out to lunch today and ordered my usual iced tea (pretty much the only thing I can drink these days besides water, as everything else is loaded with calories). They gave me a cup, I went to the soda fountain, and the iced tea machine was busted - so voila, I had a large Coke, and then another because the first tasted so good, for lunch.

Another example: went out to dinner with wife's parents last night...a few glasses of wine get into me, and suddenly I'm eating an appetizer (verboten during this diet), ordering fried chicken, and then eating the remainder of my daughter's spaghetti.

Lest I sound like a total freak, I'm not...I'm eating mostly normal foods, just less of them. A small breakfast, a salad or sandwich for lunch with an iced tea, and an entree with just a bite of an appetizer or dessert. I can eat at any restaurant...basically, I feel like I'm eating 80-90% of my normal intake, with less crap.

On the good news front, this evening i went for a huge hike up Temescal (a park in Pacific Palisades, CA) with my 2-year-old son on my back. It's a pretty strenuous hike, about 4-5 miles up about 2000 feet to a waterfall, and a helluva lot harder with a 30 pound squirmy weight on your back.

Wow, I am exhausted. But a big work out like that hike actually decreases my appetite, and I behaved myself well at dinner. Who knows...I could even see the 170s by this weekend. That'd be nice.

Lastly, my wife has been great about supporting me on this stuff. She's quite the foodie, and it's probably not the funnest thing in the world to be my wingman on this diet, but she's being v. cool.

You probably won't hear from me until early next week...wish me luck.

Thanks again for all your support. Perhaps the most motivating factor of all in this diet is not wanting to post the dreaded "well, i failed" journal entry, or, worse yet, just not posting at all as I'd be too embarrassed.

Peace.
