hey all.

just thought i'd go public with something i've been meaning to do for a long time:

i am going to lose 15 lbs by my birthday (2 months from today).

my strategy is going to be simple:

1) eat less.

that means no appetizers, no desserts, no french fries, no eggs, no red meat.

more importantly, that means no 4th helping of my wife's wonderful pastas.

2) exercise more.

this one's tougher, as i'm quite busy these days, but i can do it.

i'll be posting progress updates. this morning i'm 186 lbs.

(update: i'm posting this because i want to see if DailyStrength can actually help me achieve this long-sought goal. i've tried various things in the 4 years since i started gaining weight, and none have 'stuck'. it's easy to sit here in the mornings, when i'm not all that hungry, and proclaim my dedication. it's different around 2pm, when i'm starving in my office and there's a convenience store just downstairs, or when i get home and my kids are eating mac and cheese while i'm supposed to wait because the wife and i are going out to eat. anyway, if you got anything to say to help me out, i'm all ears.)

Exercise! Get as sweaty as you can as often as you have time. That\'s how I keep my figure ;) I love the public proclamation tactic and will support you!

15 lbs in 2 months is pretty aggressive but I\'m very supportive of your efforts!
My Recommendations:
1. Try to balance your carbs with your protein every time you eat.
2. Eat 6 small meals instead of 3 larger ones.
3. One day a week, have a free day where you eat what you want, when you want. This will sort of trick your body into not thinking it is starving and not slow down your metabolism. It also helps you stay on track better the rest of the time.
4. Make sure you have variety in your exercise and that you do a mix of cardio and strength workouts.
There\'s my 2 cents (I lost 28 lbs using these principles and have kept it off).

good luck doug! i\'m here if you need any assistance... i\'ve helped some people on a road to weightloss. what a great goal! sometimes writing things down [like you have] helps keep you accountable. :)

god luck doug! for what it\'s worth, what has worked for me in the past is setting myself an exercise goal, rather than a weightloss goal. The weightloss then just kinda comes as an added benefit. I set myself some \'manly\' goals too, so I could quietly boast about them to people. In 2004 I completed a 100km non-stop hike for charity in 30 hours. In 2005 I climbed Mt Rainier in Washington. In 2006 (last month, in fact) I did the 100km charity walk again, and cut my elapsed time by four hours.

I\'m not actually a jock or an adventurer, but if I give myself one of these goals each year, then for six months I\'m losing weight, have a reason to get up early and go for a walk, and feel like there\'s a reason not to skip the gym session.

look princess. I know you can do it and don\'t hide behind the \"I\'m busy bullshit\". Why don\'t you look at some of the problems people have here on your created project, the illnessess, the unhappyness, the feelings of loss. Not one of them say\'s \"I should have stayed at the office more. I should have stayed busy more. You don\'t have your health, you don\'t have your kids, your wife, your happyness. So, enough of the calling you on your excuses. Meet me 3 times a week. One hour Burn60 3 times a week. 4:15 monday and wednesday and 7 am Saturday morning. You can be back to the office 1 1/2 hours after you left and we can hang together. You want to loose 15 lbs, you need to get back into it and be disciplined about it. You and I both know you used to do it. Why not now. You will feel better about yourself, you will start to crave it and you will be setting a better example for K and Z. Now, what do you say? Have a twinky and give me your reasons you can\'t do it. By the way, a friend of mine, our age, just had a heart attack. How does that sit with you?

Way to go Doug! I have a feeling that you can succeed in just about anything you set your mind on doing. But truly, I believe the only way to really lose the weight is to do exactly what you\'ve already proposed. The math is simple. The endeavor, not so simple.
On the other hand... you don\'t look overweight at all -- so I\'m sure it will be a breeze for you to reach your goal in no time at all.
But did you have to start your diet the day before we\'re all suppose to get together for dinner?

Hi Doug! I think making that weight loss annoucement it awesome. Being accountable really works. I am joining you...if that\'s OK. I\'ve put back on 30 pounds (had lost 100) and my goal is to exercise a MINIMUM of 45 sweaty minutes a day 4 days a week. Plus, I have to drink 64 OZ of water each day. Scary to say out loud, but as of this morning I am 170 pounds. I\'ll weigh in again next Thursday! Way to go, Doug!
