Today I was watching Billy Elliot while doing some work and, of course, as it always does, it made me cry (I usually start at the bit where the dad breaks the picket line and pretty much keep going until the end) and I realised this was the first time in ages that I've cried for a reason, not just randomly. And then I remembered that I used to quite enjoy a good cathartic cry whereas now, because it happens so often, it's something I dread, something that drains me. So I decided to make a list of the things that used to make me cry in a good way...
When Dawn kisses Tim
When Scout realises it's Boo Radley standing in the shadows
The end of The Time Traveller's Wife and Captain Corelli's Mandolin
When Jonah gets hauled out of Gumnut Cottage
The old man getting out of prison in the Shawshank Redemption (pretty much all of the Shawshank Redemption)
March of the Penguins
Old people in general but especially single old people who dress up to go the supermarket, confused old people, an old person whose partner has Alzheimers, humiliated old people (and people being humiliated in general)
Abandoned dogs
People getting rescued days or weeks after an earthquake or other disaster
And about a million other things! One day I hope to enjoy a good cry again...
