I've been reading a lot of food and cooking sites lately, in conjuction with talking to my dietician and watching what I eat, changing things up with different foods and changing up old favorites.. it's interesting to look back now and see how I've progressed over the years, from getting the job done, to eating healthier, to getting the job done AND eating healthier.

When I was single and only cooking for myself and a room mate, I learned that Bread and eggs could do a variety of things. In fact there were times when wed go down to the states for my dad. Id buy a jug of milk, a block of cheese, 4 dozen eggs, a few loaves of bread and that would keep us going til the next payday. At that time I had my room mate and my younger sister with me. Thankfully those days are gone, but I still like the challenge of not buying new groceries outside of grocery day. Often just ducking into the pantry cupboard to pick out a few things to go together and make them. My hubby likes to watch the food network, and I really like Michael Smiths approach to cooking. There are a few other shows that we watch as well mostly the ones that are cooking real food for real people. Were definitely not a high maintenance family as far as that goes..

It amazing how taking somewhat of a flylady approach and turning onto our diet has worked. I used to get so bent on the cant haves that sooner or later there

Was a blunder, and guilty feelings and everything. When I finally decided that I wanted to do this for ME not because someone told me I needed to,
I changed things slowly. We started buying non-battered fish instead of battered fish. Sure we still have battered fish on occasion, but not all the time.

We started buying chicken breast, and lean hamburger. I started drinking more water and carrying the water bottle with me. I realized that most of the Time I was going for pop more for convenience than for actually wanting it. If Ive eaten something I shouldnt have, Its not a transgression, Im not starting Over .. I just carry on to the next day making the best choices I can. No guilty feelings, and no reason to go and binge. For so many years I had different

Fits and starts, trying to get down to a 1200 diet that one dietician suggested. Imagine my surprise to have my current dietician tell me that Im at around 900 1000 and she wants me up around 1600. Apparently Im not eating enough, and she thinks that my body is stuck in storage mode. Ive been marveling at how over the years we beat ourselves up to attain goals, and then when you least expect it you can exceed your goals and maybe you wont even notice when you surpass it. Not that Im achieved thin, or even completely healthybut you wouldnt know that to look at my food logs. It wasnt that long ago when it was suggested that the changes needed to be made and we were unraveling at how much more these other things would cost as compared to the things we were buying. Miraculous how perceptions shift depending on where youre standing at the time..

In any case, Im babbling , I apologize.. just feels good to have something positive to report. With my myriad of health issues in the last 10 years since having ovarian Cancer its so nice to have something going right

At least it's a step in the right direction. :) As an added bonus, we're entering into week 3 of testing blood sugars. My original test was 9.6, but in 2 weeks of Actos I've been consistantly in the 14's. Had to 13.2's this past week and was overjoyed. Woke up to 11.1 this morning. Still not perfect, but at least it's coming down..
Strange though that yesterday was a day I didn't have Actos -- I ran out and have to refill it today. Weird.

Kids are away this weekend, hubby and I are having a quiet puttering around the house day.. feels good :)

Hope you're having a great day, and the sun is shining wherever you are :)

I\'ve never calory counted but the docs do figure I should eat more and that my body is also in the storage state. It\'s hard to change when it\'s gone on for years. But it\'s also a problem for me because I lack appetite and it\'s hard to remember and regulate that I should eat more often and eat more.

If you ever want some recipes I could give you some of the ones I\'ve got. I\'ve got a rather big bookshelf of them but I\'ve got my favourites. Usually they are simple and healthy things like white clam chowder and the spaghetti sauce my mom makes.

For flavouring boneless/skinless chicken I recommend the \"House\" brand spice stuff. They have a really nice cajun spread that you only add a little water too or a nice greek one in a dry package you make up to marinade. You can also find a lot of good pepper mixes out. Seasoned pepper is very tasty on chicken.

How much have you lost altogether? How long have you been working on your weight? I just got a new ww recipe book that I can\'t wait to try out! I have to wait until grocery day but I am going tomorrow for a few things. Pretty cool that you have such a positive attitude. I look forward to the day that I can be a positive messenger to others as you are!!! KUDDOS to you!!

I know that when I actually \"dieted\" I could lose weight. But when I stopped it would come back with a few friends. Then I stopped dieting and my weight stabilized and I was happy about that. I realized that regardless of the diet, the big thing was an emphasis on keeping track virtually of each bite whether through calorie, gram, exchange, or... Anyhow for me at least it caused me to focus my whole life on food. Whether on what I ate or what I planned to eat or when the next meal was.

Not that I have this whole diet thing down pat. Things will improve with my improved budget. :-) But I like that 80 : 20 or 90 : 10 concept. If you eat healthy for 80% of the time you can relax and have more fun foods for 20%... But I think perhaps 90% 10% would be better. LOL

I LOVE my \"Mrs Dash\" seasoning collection. The variety of them really help us bachelors on a budget. I mean even when the cupboard gets bare pasta with a little oil and a shake of their tomato and basil is different from their extra spicy or their table blend. Also adding them to simple tomato sauces can change one from the next.

I include in my budget paying $5 each out of each $50 or $60 for seasoning type things whether Oregano, Cocoa Powder, Vanilla, Mrs Dash, or whatever. It keeps the basics of my seasoning shelf up. Now I want to make sure I have fresh garlic and ginger too. (Not to mention onions.) (I said not to mention onions. LOL)

With my legs as swelled as they are, I don\'t get out walking much. I\'m not sure that I\'ve actually lost weight at this point. I cannot wait til I can get something going with treatment on my legs. Then maybe I\'ll get to see some fruits for my efforts. Right now I\'m just enouraged by a little positive reinforcement for a change.

I\'ve been trying to focus on the parts of all of this that i have some control over, and trying not to think about those I don\'t. A little misguided maybe, but it\'s the only way to keep myself sane.

Mrs. Dash is my hero! I love those! There are a few different companies now that offer no-salt alternatives, and I try them out every now and again.
It\'s funny when I was a kid I absolutely hated onions, and now I find I\'m using cooking onions more and more. From soup stock, to jazzing up hash browns, and all kinds of things in between.
Yesterday I added a little parsley flakes and garlic powder to leftover mashed potatoes and they were a hit.. like they were a brand new meal. I *love* finding things like that..
I too like to pick up at least one or two new things every time we buy groceries, whether it\'s replacing a spice, or buying a new oil, then it\'s never too big a bite all at once.
It is amazing to me how the littlest change can make a meal that would ordinarily be mundane and turn it into something brand new to tantalize your taste buds and renew your interest all over again :)

Will continue this food chat over on the BB\'s.. :)

I\'ve been reading your journal entries and find a lot of similarities in our stories. Sometimes I think cancer \"thrivers\" are members of some kind of club. Weird. Keep on thriving. Love, Light, and Health to you.
