Yesterday I had a nice time at my great-niece's birthday party. Almost everybody in our family showed up with the exception of one niece, her husband and their daughter. They had promised to be there, but my niece said that their son became ill at the last minute. She had used the same excuse at another party last year. How many times can you use the same excuse and still turn up believable? My brother looked a lot better than I had seen him look in a long time. Maybe sobriety has helped him after all. He made it a point to come over to where I was sitting and talk with me several times. I was not in the mood to be chatty with him, but I did manage to be friendly since he made the initial approach to me. I was the first one to arrive at my niece's house. That gave me time to talk to her, and her husband, considering their possible move to Des Moines, Iowa. I am (almost) sure that they have already decided to move there. My niece said they have to go where the jobs are. There are three or four other offers, which have been made to my niece's husband in the Denver area. One is not far from where I live, but I still think they will wind up moving to Iowa. While we were talking, my niece suddenly got up and got a flyer regarding a play that would be in Denver this coming summer. She asked me if I would go with her in June. It sounded like it would be fun, so I said yes. Then I thought to ask her whether she would still be in Denver at that time. She said she did not know. That left me more confused than ever about whether they would be living in another state by then. As the party concluded, one of my nieces said that when summer came we needed to start getting together. It sounded good, but I do not believe she meant it. I have been that route before, and was hurt quite badly when she and her husband all but disappeared and left me "hanging out to dry.” I do not think I want to take another chance on them again. My nephew told me be sure and call him if I ever needed anything. I am sure he meant what he said. I told him that I had been thinking about rearranging some of the furniture in my apartment during the summer. He said that he would be willing to do it for me whenever I wanted, and that all I had to do was give him a call. Last night I had another new person helping me to bed. She was being trained by one of my regular people. Unfortunately, during the process of getting me out of my wheelchair and into my bed, she somehow managed to twist my right leg. It hurt a lot all night long and today it is quite swollen. If the same thing happens tonight, I will call the home health care agency tomorrow and ask for someone different. I am tired of being used as a guinea pig to train new people. We had beautiful weather yesterday. The sun was shining and it was a wonderful 74°. The situation is different today. It is cold and there is snow on the ground once again. They are predicting that we will get somewhere between two and four inches of the white stuff. March and April are our largest snow months, so it looks as though I will have to put up with a couple of more months of bad weather. Yuck!
