Yesterday one of my friends wrote something in her journal about beginning to think that her dog was a lush.  This started me thinking about something that happened many years ago when my grandmother (my mother's mother) came for a visit.

After she sat in a chair, my mother asked her if she would like a drink.  She said she would like a Manhattan.  Mother knew that would be the answer, and already had one prepared for her.  My grandmother took a few sips and put the glass on the floor under her chair.

A short while later she asked my mother for another drink.  Mom kind of blinked, then went into the kitchen and made another one for her.  A few minutes later, my grandmother asked for a third drink.

I could see that my mother wanted to say something, but she kept her thoughts to herself since she did not want to upset her own mother.  She brought in another drink, and my grandmother took a few sips before placing the glass on the floor under her chair again.

Before long, another request came from my grandmother for her fifth drink.  My mother could not keep quiet any longer.  She told my grandmother that she did not care how many drinks she had, but she thought that she was drinking them fast.  My grandmother insisted that she only took a couple of sips before putting her glass on the floor.  She said that when she picked up her glass for another drink, the alcohol was gone and she did not know where it went.

One look at my mother and it was obvious that she did not believe this story.  Nevertheless, my grandmother insisted that she was telling the truth.

Everyone then began looking around the room and our eyes all focused on my small miniature dachshund, which was staggering around the room as she headed for my grandmother's chair apparently looking for another glass from which she could drink alcohol. smiley-tongue-out.gif That proved that my dog could drink a lot, but could definitely not hold her liquor very well.

The mystery was solved.  The only thing remaining to be seen was how my dog would handle her hangover in the morning.
