Tuesday, July 2, 2007 5:40 PM   This has not been a good weekend.  I do not seem to be able to get along with many people -- not that I see all that many anyway.  I have written a few things in my journal, which have made some people a bit angry.  One of the bad things in life is that once we have said things we cannot take them back.   My depression got much worse this weekend.  It hit me like an 18-wheeler.  This seems to happen a lot during the first weekend of the month.  This is the time when I get my Social Security check.  During the end of last week, I had a very strong craving to get my money and go buy some drugs.  However, so far I have been very fortunate to turn my back on that feeling.   I feel very unhappy with my life, and do not see much of a future in it.  My life is dull.  I am unable to see a way that I can change it.  I need to find something to do that will make me feel worthwhile, thereby giving me a reason to keep on living.   A Daily Thought:   “Challenges can be stepping stones or stumbling blocks. It's just a matter of how you view them.” -Unknown

Jim try finding a local place that you can spend a few hours. I know it sounds crazy especially when I have had problem with transportation too. But get a ride to a park, or a shopping center, any place that you can get to a bathroom and food will work. I almost have to get out each day to keep going.

I think you should volunteer your writing services somewhere. I know it can get old saying that you are helping others here at this site (but you are). Research charities in your area and then phone one of them. Tell them that you are a retired professional writer and would like to offer your services in any sort of writing that they may need (brochures for example). It is no myth what they say about volunteering - that it can change your life and give you a whole new perspective. If nothing else, you will see how many others are in need out there, and there is always somebody worse off than we (think) we are. A few days ago, I myself filled out an application to become a \"big sister/mentor\" to an underprivileged kid. Even though nothing has yet gotten underway, I feel a zillion times better just thinking of the potential help that I may be able to give somebody. The great thing about volunteering is that you can pick something that interests you. Even if it is licking envelopes for a worthy cause (somebody has to do it!), it is better than feeling worthless which is such nonsense because it is just so untrue.

I am sorry to hear you are not feeling so good. All of the above are good ideas if you are up to doing any of them. In the mean time take extra good care of yourself and be a friend to yourself. Love tcat

Sorry to see that you\'re down. Good job on resisting that craving - I know it can be really hard, but stay strong!!! What are some interests you have, I\'m sure you can find something to keep you interested.

Jim,I hope that what I am about to say to you come`s out right.I really think you are an inspiration to me because of some of the thing`s that you have wrote here in your journal and to me in my journal.Because of some of the thing`s you have said I have decided to try and write a book.Yes the guy who when I started to come to Daily Strength I couldn`t even type very good. But because of friend`s like you that have encouraged me to keep going.I have been in the same place as you are now,not feeling that I have any worth at all and really wondering if I should even try anymore. But you and some of the other people have been good friend`s and stood bye me and gave me courage to keep fighting and to not quit.So what I am saying is that I`m here for you and you should think about writting your story or something that you would like to see published, after all you were already into writting. So in this case look at what you used to do for a living and use it in what you can do now.I hope you can understand what I`m trying to say to you,YOU are an inspiration to me so keep fighting.Talk to you later.M.

You know, Monte has it right!

Writing is VERY therapeutic - turning something bad into something good. Empowering others...

You know, Jim, maybe you could collaborate together??? I find it easier to write with someone else. You know what else, it would even make it easier for Monte if you helped the editing!

I wonder if we could start a writing circle... We could find people to collaborate with and we could all share our stories. You know, they have lots of \"Chicken Soup\"-type books where people share their experiences in order to inspire others...

What if we wrote a series of books called \"You\'re not alone\" or something?? C\'mon, Jim. Whadda you think???
