Wow....time has flown by since my last journal...I've been checking in every day and reading my friend's journals....but haven't spent time writing my own. Come the first of June, I will be 5 mos. gamble free!  That is such a blessing, and the blessing has been made possible by my wonderful friends here.  Without you all, I would still be locked in my secret struggle, my shame, and the feeling of being all alone with my addiction.  Thank you all so much for your continued support of me.  I feel honored by the gift of your friendship, and of your time.  In the words of Chris,  you have truly brought a light to the darkness I was living in. I am still working too much....making progress on repairing the financial damage wrought by my gambling....I guess 58 hrs a week is too much...LOL....I am laughing about it now...but I see myself scaling that down after October....October 15 to be precise (IRS extension day!). I have a goal to meet then....and then back to a much more normal work week.   I have three "long weekend" type trips planned in the next two months that will break this up...have already saved the money necessary to carry through while I'm gone on those trips.  Will go to San Francisco the weekend after next for a 3 day seminar.  Hope that will feel like a break even though I'll have 8 hr/day meetings all three days...at least it will be a change of pace!  Then in July I'm going to go visit my Mom for 5 days...and finally end of July, another three day seminar in Lake Tahoe.  The idea of going to Tahoe really scared me when I first signed up for it, but funny....it doesn't any more.  I think I'll be OK- not really worried so much about gambling while there.  As Mike once told me in so many words...there are gambling venues all around me now...what is so different about Tahoe?   It truly is all in my attitude and state of mind. One thing that is really different, is that when I was gambling, having to go away was such an ordeal.  First, I just didn't want to go anywhere there was no gambling!  That is no longer an issue!  Second, I was always so broke it was a huge financial hardship to be away from work...when you are self-employed, there is no vacation pay!.....and office expenses such as payroll keep piling up even if you are not there to generate income!  This time around, I was able to PLAN and save up.....WOW.....what a revolution in my behavior!!!! Now...I just need to learn how to balance better....time to work, time to take good care of myself, time for friends and family, time for R&R.....I have to learn to take a little from here and put a little there.  I have to scale back from work a little and put aside time for more exercise!  I was working out a lot before I started this all-out financial recovery thing....and now  I'm not....and...oh, dear...I can tell...not feeling as good....and the old diabetes is not being controlled as beautifully as it once was.  That...is just not acceptable.    So....I've got to start balancing a little back the other way.....and that, I think,is the art of living....a good basis of work there....a splash of fun over there.....some solid maintenance here....throw a dash of adventure on this end....sprinkle on a lot of love for friends and family....and a lovely picture results that I really want to be in.... Love to all of my dear friends......xoxoxo

Diane, you sound so good, so balanced. Enjoy your trips away. Even though you have to be in meetings, just the change of scenery does us good. You are so right, need to not concentrate so much on work, and throw in a little fun, adventure, etc. I know exactly where you are at right now, and unfortunately work HAS to take priority right now, but soon you can work in the other stuff. Do take care of yourself, diabetes is nothing to mess with. I too have really gotten out of shape, and have put on some weight, no exercise happening for me either at this time. I think when I was gambling, since I would binge every 2-3 weeks and go 3 days or more without sleep , or food for that matter, I kept my weight off. Not a good way to do it, but it happened, then when the binge was over I could stress out for days and not eat. Wow, what an unhealthy way to live. Congrats on your 5 month anniversary coming up.

Congratulations on the upcoming birthday....doesn\'t it feel awesome?!?!?!? I am so proud of you, and proud of how you have embraced recovery, and literally turned your life around. I myself, figured out that without a balance, I am so off kilter, it isn\'t even funny. Somedays, I feel the \'scales\' tipping toward one side or the other, and fortunately, I notice the changes before it gets too far out of hand. As you have stated, you are painting a lovely picture with your life changes, and that is one of the things that recovery is all about....life changes. You and I, being self employed, will always have a tendency to be \'workaholics\', but as I am finding out, and I am sure you are too, our businesses can get along just fine without us for a day or two. Its amazing how just a little bit of planning, and forethought, goes a very long way......whereas before, during the active gambling days, there was no forethought, only planning the next trip to the casino. could have saved ourselves alot of time, if we had just pulled up to the door, got out, walked over the trash can, tossed our money into it, and drove back home! LOL what an insane world it was then......the world is still a bit insane going on around us, but at least we aren\'t adding insanity to the mix.
Your trips sound terrific..even if its to sit thru meetings all day, you still have the evenings in a different location, different scenery, different people.
You sound so calm, so peaceful, and so happy! You deserve it.

hugs and love

Your recipe for life sounds good to me. So balanced. Yes congratulations on the 5 months. You have worked at each and everyone of those days. You have gained a better position financially but more importantly you have gained back your self respect. You should be so proud of YOU. I am. You are a constant source of encouragement to me and others here - I am so thankful to have graced your friendship.
What a fabulous couple of trips you have planned - this is all good, all well deserved. You are right we need so much more in our day to day recovery than just the focus of not gambling. At first , it seems that is all there is, just one foot in front of the other and then as we get stronger we can start to focus a little on other areas as well.
Thank you for being you - hugs today. I love your journals. love Suzi

\"I just need to learn how to balance better\"

Ditto!!!!

happy for you about your trips...going on one myself this weekend...life is so different than it used to be.

so different.
in so many ways.

anyway...

Tahoe again....
When I went to Vegas I was not afraid.
Not at all.
I felt strong and whole, a warrior!!!
but...
I respect this thing...this \'illness\'
it is, as g.a. says, baffling and insidious...

so I was not afraid....but I was ...ummm AWARE.

:)

you\'ll be fine.

love ya,
peg

Hello my friend! You sound so good! I\'m so darn proud of you...I love reading your journals. You always seem so together, you have a vision, you have a goal, you are taking the baby steps, you are helping others as you help yourself, you are on walking the walk not just talking the talk. Congrats on every single day you have been gamble free! I\'m struggling with the balance of things myself...thanks for bringing it to my attention through your journal. I need to take from here and give to there a little bit more, too!

Have a great week! Start packing for those cool trips!
Love, Sandie
