So this awful pain started in the center of my abdomen last night. Today it feels worse. I am worried because I have a Fentanyl pain patch on and I took Vicoden early this morning and then Aleve at around 9AM. That should be enough medicine, but it's not helping. I called my gyn and I felt really weird about it because I am thinking that it might just be normal cycle pain, but it is really severe. I was afraid he would just tell me that it was normal and I should grin and bear it. (I have been told that before by another doctor. She was miserable and used to be his partner. She saw me while he was on vacation. Told me it was normal and she wouldn't do anything about it. Then she took my blood pressure and it was 200/100 so she admitted me to the hospital to watch my blood pressure, but she wouldn't acknowledge that my pain was causing it to be so high. I had to wait until my doctor came back from vacation 3 days later.) Anyway, he didn't say that and I know he was getting ready to leave the office for the weekend so I didn't want to ask him to see me. I was thinking that this para cervical block thing he does might work this time because the pain is in the center and that is where the nerves are that he injects with the Marcaine. It is a painful and scary procedure and I really don't like to do it unless I am desperate. Let me tell you how it goes. First off, it is an internal procedure. So he starts off as though he is going to do a pap smear. The women know, speculum and all that crap. So I am half naked which makes me uneasy to begin with. Then he injects the cervix with a numbing solution so it doesn't hurt when he moves it. (This sounds so gross!) Then he takes a very large spinal needle and fills it with Marcaine. He injects the nerves which I believe are behind the uterus. Now just think, he is poking a VERY LARGE needle INTO nerves, that is very painful and I am not supposed to move because there are sensitive areas there that I don't want him poking by accident. This is usually the point where I squeeze the hand of whoever is there, my husband or the nurse, whoever. The Marcaine can get into my blood stream and that makes strange things happen like I might be able to taste the medicine, I might shiver, once my lips turned blue, once I had a very bad headache afterwards or (and this has never happened to me) I could have a seizure. So we try not to do it often anymore. I have had a lot in the past and I have recently had 2. I don't really want to do it, but I am wondering if it would help. Also, all this attention and pain in that particular area of my body is difficult for me emotionally. Which for those who know my past can understand why.Anyway, since the nurse had told me he was getting ready to leave, but he would call me back before he did, I decided not to ask. I think any excuse not to do it, you know. So, I talked with him and told him what it was like and he said to be generous with the Dilauded pills and take it every 2-3 hours because he didn't want to have to admit me to the hospital again. I don't want that either, but how much narcotic medication is too much? Then he told me he was not on call, but I could call him directly if I needed some help over the weekend. It takes a lot for me to call him when it is his day off and hopefully it won't get to that and I will feel better with some rest. Crossing my fingers. So that is what is going on physically. I am going to rest a little, maybe I will write about the emotional later.

Kristen he would have directed you to the Dr on call if he REALLY did not want you to call him. Call him if you need to. He must understand what you\'re going through to some extent or he would not have offered either.
How much narcotic medication is too much? Too much for what? I understand you are worried about side effects and it is understandable. Do some research but for now I\'d follow what he says. Deal with what you\'re going through now. Its your body, you have the final say. He works for you, right? But it sounds like you trust him and that tells me a lot about him.
Ken is right, the doc wouldn\'t have you call him if he didn\'t want to be bothered. He sounds like a good doctor.
