#4 workout
Good afternoon everyone,
Just a quick update. Did the same type of workouts on the treadmill and eliptical. Wanted to let you all know that I did workout last night at 5:30pm. Everything went fine. pushed myself alittle bit - my heart rate at the highest was about 155 (down from 160 on Sunday). This means its almost time to increase the time and speed (gradual increase not an all out 6.0 sprint lol!). I will do this on 3/21. Even though I will be on a Mon/Wed/Fri/Sun schedule next week I will still workout 2 days in a row on Wed/Thur. I am hoping that it will be an easy workout with the group. Most of the people starting haven't even ran a step.
Bri, I read your comment from the last journal. I highly doubt that I would be last at any of these 5K training runs (well..maybe if I went into the running group). I have been 2-3 to the last at previous runs in the past. Not fun. I like to scope out the amount of people at races. When I see less than 100 people - I start to panic but I know I need to work really hard, cut back on my actual walking during the race and just concentrate. Basically get it in my mind that I better hurry! I like the bigger races. There is also a plus when they actually have walkers doing the 5K. Then I knew that I wouldn't be last. I considered myself a back of the pack runner. when I was training for my marathon, I found myself breaking a lot of PR's. Both PR's in the past were: 5K: 29.29 (my godfather helped me with this, at a small parklike 5K run), 10K: 1:03 (4th of july run) 15K: 1:45 (Utica Boilermaker 15K) Marathon: 5:30:29 (1998 Walt Disney World Marathon). Nothing fancy. But the 5K, 10K and 15K's were done prior to the marathon or just after. Legs were extremely fresh and in training mode.
I start the 5K training runs on Thursday 3/24 at the Buffalo General Hospital site. Wonder what they have planned for us. Hopefully will do some walking. They are suppose to email us a schedule. I will have to check on my roadrunner.com account. I will need to purchase running sneakers. I wonder what sneaker advantage has. I usually spend close to $95.00 for a good pair. Believe me, I have tried purchasing cheap and it left me sore and more tired. Having a great pair of sneakers really helps with development and endurance with running. I won't ever buy cheap. I did it once. Never again.
I found myself a new hobby - paint my numbers. Its a picture of a bunch of fishes in the ocean. As soon as I finish it, I will take a pic and post it. I started it last night but I could only work on it for 15 minutes - my eyes hurt so bad (tired from the workout) that I needed to go to bed last night at 9.
Thats it for now.

Sounds like you\'re making wonderful progress. Bear in mind that your heart rate will fluctuate from workout to workout. That\'s why I prefer to track my heart rate, but also go by the Rate of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale. There\'s two sets of scales. One is between 1 and 10 and the other is between 6 and 20. You rate yourself based upon your overall feeling, with the lowest numbers equated to how you feel resting watching TV and the highest number equated to the most challenging, exerting thing that you have ever done. If you\'re using the 1-10 scale you can double the number and add a zero, and often times that would be a good assumption of your heart rate. With the 6-20 scale, all you have to do is add a zero. It\'s amazing how the RPE can predict heart rate. It\'s up to you to pick your target RPE number. I usually aim between 7 and 8 on the 10 point scale or 15 t0 17 on the 20 point scale.
Don\'t worry about coming in last. The important thing is that you\'re out there doing it. Many \"able bodied\" people would not be able to do a 5 K at all. Even if you come in towards the back of the pack, you\'re out there doing it in spite of everything that you\'ve been through. You should be really proud of yourself even if you come in towards the back of the pack.
I don\'t skimp on running shoes, either. I need to buy a new pair. I\'ll probably drop around $100; although, I bought my latest pair on closeout from Nike.com at a steal. I think that I paid $40 for them. I bought a pair early last year before I was placed on disability at $160!
Anyways, keep up the good work. Warm weather is coming. I\'ll probably finally be able to run outdoors the middle of next week.
You are doing so good. You will do well in this. Also in the biggest loser contest. I like the fact that you have taken up a hobby. This is great. Keep doing what you are doing. You are on the right track!
