I have trouble with chat here to, when someone needs to talk I encourage them to go to Safe Harbor Compulsive Gambling hub, join chat there under a name, I meet them there say hi to everyone there for a bit then head into their private chat. Usually at safe harbor there is someone that has been in recovery a long time, usually done the 12 steps or something, anyway they are very wise, and helpful, its a different kind of help to DS, I am determined to get my help anywhere that works.
If your new sometimes in the safe harbor chat will ask whether you want to have a private chat if that happens SAY YES because they are great and your chatting in real time so getting questions out as you think of them.
Again long reply for a short question I am like that:), really pleased you have taken this step, and from you message you are reading peoples journals, that is such a good thing to do. hugs

chat is very tempermental and often does work. If someone is online it will say click to chat on their profile page, but it sometimes wont work.
also depends if they have their chat activated or turned off i think..
