On December 31, 2000, a friend of mine (who was the girlfriend of my older daughter) and had been staying with me for a few days, decided to kill herself. In the back bedroom of my apartment.I found this very hard to deal with, as you can imagine. I really liked the girl and considered her close to another daughter. One of the things that I felt I had to do was block off that bedroom for a while, so I pushed furniture in front of one door and kept the other one closed. This lasted a few months, until I could deal with going into the room.Just about the time when I felt up to tackling the room, my daughter came home with a new room mate (just a room mate this time), and he and I started spending alot of time together. He helped me to renovate that room, and shortly after he moved in with me. He was 17 years younger than me, and you can imagine the ego boost that this gave me, after having been alone for almost 10 years (and resigned to the idea of being alone for the rest of my life). The following April, my uncle died after a long illness.Shortly after that, in July, my youngest brother killed himself. He was 35 and had been mentally unstable for more than 10 years. I suppose that it shouldn't have been a total shock, but it was. He was angry at me when he died. I found the body. I'll never forget the look of him.The following March, my father died after a long illness. He was angry with me when he died. My mother called me to the hospital, along with my remaining 2 brothers, to see my father before they took him away. I'll never forget the look on his face.Sometime during all of this, my best friend from High School died. He never reached 50. I did not, however, find out about it for years. Almost glad about that. I don't think I could have dealt with it, although, I would have gone to that funeral if I had known. Really loved that guy!The "boyfriend" went to the funerals with me. I needed the support, however, after all the funerals, one day he said to me that my family was "sick", because too many of them were dying.Cruel, selfish, and insensitive, all at the same time. Impressive...
