When I left my husband in 1990, I drove a cab for a while. It was easier than working in an office, because I could dress any way I felt like and spent alot of time in the car alone. I couldn't support myself, and my children, driving cab, so I went to a temp agency who found me a job at Fleet Bank.My first job at Fleet was as a secretary in the Private Banking department. We delt with rich people. For the first year or so, it was wonderful. My skills with the computer (and my ability to type 85 wpm) won me a promotion to Senior Secretary. Then the biological waste product hit the rotary oscilator. My divorce was going through, my soon-to-be ex had rented our house out to his sister, her useless husband and 4 out of control children (plus big dogs) and our assets were diminishing. He also took every joint credit card we ever had, which were plenty, maxed them out, and stopped paying the bills. Within a few months he had spent $28,000 in revolving charges (with nothing to show for it), and moved in with his girlfriend. It was difficult to establish a new life for myself and my children on a secretary's salary. We could barely afford food, and could not get food stamps because he had applied for them using my name. We could barely afford heat, and could not get heating assistance, because he had applied for it using my name. My credit was ruined and all my assets were gone. I didn't even have a bed for the first few months. To top off the financial and emotional trauma, both of my children developed severe emotional problems which had to be delt with. My older daughter swallowed an entire bottle of asprin, and my younger daughter became violent and out of control. It stayed that way for years. Years during which I worked hard to keep the job, keep ahead of the bills, and try to save for the future.
