vacation

I just returned from ten days away from sunny California to visit Vermont and Montreal and Quebec City with my daughter, son-in-law, his mother, and 2 yr old granddaughter and 4 yr old grandson. I checked the weather, but did not pack enough warm clothes. It’s been so hot here (100 degrees in LA the day before I left), I didn’t think of taking boots or a jacket. I ended up buying a cute little coat in Vermont.
Quebec City was charming, with tourists walking along the boardwalk by the St. Lawrence river. I saw so many couples strolling or dining together. I thought “Don’t take things for granted! If you only knew what it’s like to lose your spouse.”
At seven months out, I felt just a low grade depression. I was able to enjoy the sights and my family, but there was definitely an underlying sadness, especially when seeing all the couples. Luckily my screaming 2 year old and busy 4 year old kept me occupied. Also I did not have any “alone” time to be sad and lonely because I didn’t have my own room or space!
I loved traveling with my husband. On the other hand, he would not have wanted to travel with my daughter’s family. I did my share of babysitting, and paying for meals and tickets to museums, gas fill ups, etc. As a mom, I want to help my kids out. That was sometimes a bone of contention between my husband and I...We resented it when the other was spending too much money on our own kids...
It was nice seeing places I’d never been before but it’s also good to be back in my nice big house with my 4 beloved dogs. I am growing to really like my privacy and alone-time!
