So, a while back, I was giving someone advice on how to get help for something. They were stuck on one idea that family would always be there to help, and that they should stick with getting help from there. That in and of itself is not always true, and unfortunately is becoming less and less true everyday. There's no guarantee that you'll find a family member who has been through everything you have, and they might even turn their backs and pretend nothing's wrong with you, or do the exact opposite and assume the worst. That is why parents are both the best and worst sources for comfort.Professional help is always best when dealing with depression or any problem of that sort. Sure, family will be there, but it is not always guaranteed that they will stick with you through all your problems. Don't depend on them for that, instead look towards counselors or friends. Most often parents will only have the experiences of their generation, and that only helps you to a tiny extent. Always find someone who has had a similar experience to yours, and reach out to them.Family is a very core aspect of what I call an important learning experience. Some people deal with events better with family, some without. It is not a matter of how someone is brought up, but more of how well someone connects with other family members. Sometimes that means that someone will be closer to family than ever, sometimes it means that the person should only maintain minimal contact. Nothing is guaranteed and there are no definite ways to determine things until the ball really starts to roll.Friends are similar in that aspect, but at the same time they are very much more of what you need. Some have gone through similar experiences, and will be able to help you out in that department. Especially considering that most of they time they will be experiencing things around the same time you experience them (elementary school, high school, college/university). However, and I cannot stress this enough, it is always best to stick closest to your open-minded friends, and not to the friends that assume almost everything. My own experiences with family are mixed. Most of the times I definitely do feel like I am not comfortable sharing things with them, and have been looking to getting a decent job and finally moving out. I definitely have gone through my fair share of experiences this year, and I am looking forward to finally having a place of my own. That, however, is still far in the future.
