Not again....
Well, if I were to give the top 10 things I did NOT want to have happen again, my cat having another urethral blockage would be number 1. Guess what happened again?
Luckily, we caught it right as it happened AND were able to get in to my regular vet for treatment. Sparrow is home now, resting a bit before I go shove pills down his throat. This time though, I've been sent home with 9 little syringes of liquid pain killers (with a bit of sedative to help keep him calm) along with the meds to help relax his urethra.
I've also bought non-clay kitty litter, this one's Arm & Hammer corn stuff. The clay litter could be contributing to his blockages. The vet also had me buy prescription urinary health wet food. It's $45 for 24 cans. Still though, all of this (litter and food included) only cost $400 this time.
The vet said that his urethra is narrower than the norm, which could be what is contributing to the blockages. She also said that if it happens AGAIN, my only options would be to get surgery done to shorten/widen his urethra (basically a sex change) or euthanize him. Also his chances of re-blocking in the next 24 hours are high, so if it happens again this weekend, I can't afford to do the surgery. Definitely not what I wanted to hear this weekend.
I know I said I wanted a distraction from the worry/fear/nerves of waiting to hear the results of the blood test, but this is NOT what I meant!

Oh poor Sparrow! I\'m so glad you caught it quick and that he\'s okay! It\'s a crappy distraction, but at least it\'s a distraction! Cuddling with my cats always makes me feel better :)

Oh girl, I am so sorry - I know that our animals are just as much family and our kids as anything and I am so sorry he is sick and you guys are dealing with this. I hope you can conquer this and keep him healthy.
Thanks ladies. He\'s doing better now. DH and I talked about it last night and have decided that as soon as we can afford it, we\'re electing to have the surgery done. Lets just hope he can stay healthy long enough for us to save enough for the surgery!
so sorry about Sparrow :-( He\'s lucky he has such a caring mommy and daddy. Im hoping he\'s not in too much pain and gets better quickly!
My moms cat always had this issue, he would get blocked, couldn\'t pee, just meow in pain. After thousands of dollars spent, they eventually had to change his diet and he was on a special food. I think it never happened again after. Good luck.
Thanks Nelly and quitethepickle! Sparrow is doing much better today, even playing with some of his toys. He\'s eating, drinking and using the litter fairly normally too, so always a bonus!
