The actual substance he\'s looking to use in robitussin is the dextromethorphan. If he\'s going to use it, make sure he\'s \"smart\" about it, and doesn\'t use anything OTC that has any other active ingredients in it other than dextromethorphan (i.e. guiafinissen, acetaminophen, etc.)
I say this coming from a person who has used it before, amongst various other substances. On some level, he doesn\'t want to be in this world, or the reality of the world as he perceives it. I don\'t know if he\'s trying to escape into happiness, numbness, emotion, whatever....it doesn\'t really matter, what matters is he\'s perceiving something as unbearable. I don\'t know if he\'s seeing a therapist/psychiatrist or what?...but a safe person he can trust and that has faith in him is what he needs.
I never sought out help until after I was 18 and out of my parents house because I didn\'t want them involved. I didn\'t see a reason to change my actions until my current doctor actually showed that he cares, and offered me the agreement to show up in his office, sober or otherwise, if I needed him. Eventually that turned into my showing up there before making poor decisions instead of after the fact.
I don\'t know if that helps at all, just trying to offer you another perspective.
