Ok.... I off cloud nine and reality set in.  I'm still struggling with my baby.  He did come home at curfew, which is good (perhaps we should have complimented him on that) but refused to go to counseling yesterday.....flipping me the bird as he took off.  And where did this kid come from?  What happened to my sweet, easy going, fun to be around son?  Yesterday I called the juvenile detective and told him that I want my son to skip the community service detention program and go directly to drug court.  He told me that it was unusual to do what I am asking...especially since we haven't received the court papers, yet.  I hope I am doing the right thing.  The detective told me that my son would have to qualify and asked me if my son thought about the detention program.  I told him that my son thought it was a joke because of what his "friends" told him.  The detective then said that the boys my son pals with have been through the program and it didn't work for them.  Man.....he knows my son's friends!  Think we're getting a reputation here?  I hate to say this, but I don't even know the guys he hangs around with.  I only am aware of a few, one being his best friend who lives down our street.  My son is and always has been very, very social, so not only does he know lots and lots of kids not only in our community, but  knows kids in 4 surrounding communities.  If he ever decides to be a politician because of his dynamic personality, he will have to admit, however, that he inhaled.  **Sorry....gotta keep a some sense of humor. The reason I am taking this step.....drug court......is because of my friend whose son went through the right channels.....and this was one of them.  Her son is off drugs and very proud of himself for it.  The boys I've heard of in our community who have been in trouble for pot and drugs seem to get caught over and over again......and they just went through the community court.  Still I am hoping I'm doing the right thing.  I will leave it up to the courts and the assessment to see what the right course is.  I can't determine, at this point, how much he is doing......if at all.  I have NEVER seen him under the influence but I have seen a change in his personality......so there must be something....

Brave steps! The issue will be to get him to change his circle of friends from the closet group who uses to the other acquaintances...who could develop into good friendships.

About the counseling -- perhaps the incentive that family therapy gives him an opportunity to have a voice in his life; a neutral 3rd party who will listen to his side and a manageable way to negotiate earning back privileges. Take Care!
