Last night was the high school awards night.  Our middle guy was to receive an art award, but didn't want to attend the ceremony.  He thinks it's stupid to get an award for art.  In addition, the night was going to be so long....and boring.  We finally convinced him to go.... we went.....stayed a few minutes .....then left.  It would have been hours before his name would have been called and that would have been torturous for him (& us) to sit through.   He's so smart but didn't make the honor roll since freshmen year partly because of his depression.  I know it bothers him that all his friends were cleaning up most of the awards.  Fortunately,  he can handle these things because he's doing well emotionally and that he's matured.  He said the art award was embarrassing.  His older brother received tons of awards and I know that bothers him.  I wonder how our youngest one will feel.  He's smart, too, but really struggles with ADD and has a learning disability.  He doesn't like school and it's a struggle to get him focused on his studies.  His teachers don't buy this ADD.....one called him lazy and said that he should be getting A's in her class.  She didn't call him lazy to his face (I don't think) but she did say it to me.  She's been trying to help him (under my direction) but gets frustrated when he forgets his hmwk etc..  I understand she is just as frustrated as we are but... when she has the mind set that he's lazy......that gets in the way and doesn't help his situation.   He worries me.  I hope we can help him find his passion.  He's very creative and a hands on learner.  I think any kind of tech school is out of the question, however, because at this stage in his life....it's all about friends.......wouldn't want to leave them......

Friends are so important to our kids at this age...and he will find his passion. I know those awards ceremonies take forever...I was disappointed when my son didn\'t want to go...but he went with us anyway...and yikes, it took almost 4 hours...they even were announcing every school that each student had been accepted at and attending and all of their scholarships...I should have listened to him...We live and learn...

Among other things, this ADD is difficult, because the WORLD, the job marked, etc do not care about it. These thoughts were often in the back of my mind when teaching any child with any kind of difficulties. I wanted to be patient, considerate, and thoughtful, but then I would think... I often wished I had boundless energy, time, and resources so that I could connect art, music, gaming, anything, with my subject. Personally, I never thought of kids as lazy, just disinterested. Sparking their interest was one of my challenges, not always easy.. But then I would think about the boss, the job, the world, etc.. I hope a life can be built around his creative and hands on nature! Good luck and strength to all of you,,
