Just received an e-mail from my oldest son, S.C. He is in Haiti on a mission trip through the youth group he's in. It was an awesome surprise to get an e-mail from Haiti! He's staying at the school he's been raising funds for starting when he was a sophomore in high school and now he's a sophomore in college and can actually see the school and children in person. Now he's REALLY going to feel a connection with the school! He said the poverty is unbelievable, yet many have cell phones and there are a lot of motorcycles.
He told us he helped set up the clinic, took patients temperatures, among some other nursing duties. He also helped his friends film and do some kind of documentary about the school and its people. And he's a history major? Of all the overseas trips this kid has been on.......this one is going to be the most interesting one. Looking forward to hearing the stories.
On another note....Oh.... I'm so happy. Long story...but I was asked by a suicide mental health advocate group to contact my other two son's high school to see if they would be interested in participating in a Walk to promote mental health awareness & suicide prevention. Well, as usual, the principal didn't respond to my request and missed the deadline for the Kick Off event. I thought it wasn't going to be a "go". I was wrong, he approved it. And it looks like I'm going to be the parent liaison for the club who is running it. Perhaps we will have ONE more fund raising event here at my house to jump start it....but I'm apprehensive about having another one because last time we did have some kids who, I know, weren't exactly innocent. Nothing obvious but we found some beer cans scattered throughout the neighborhood. Not a good thing.....
