I'm a little sore today after playing 3 soccer games this weekend, after being off of it for about a month, due to the holidays. I am not complaining, however. It's a good thing! I'm going to be on 3 teams this session. Love it!

My son's psyc. dr. wants my son to take a blood test to check the levels of serotonin. If they're elevated, I guess, he wants to change my son's medication. My son is doing very well emotionally on Zoloft but has some unpleasant physical side effects. I think it's because he's taking Amitriptyline, also, for headaches. From what I've read these two drugs together can cause these symptoms. I knew way back when my son was put on both that these two drugs were not meant to be taken together, but my son's psych. dr. and neurologist said it was okay. When I asked about it again, recently, about the combo. the dr. said that because my son was taking Amit. before the Zoloft and didn't have any of these symptoms, it wasn't the combo of the 2 drugs, just the Zoloft alone. It doesn't make sense to me. I know he can have these symptoms with just the Zoloft, but when "it" warns that the combo. causes this problem, why ignore it? I love my son's doctor, they way he interacts with my son, he always available when needed, has a great reputation, but why do I doubt him? Why can't he just lower my son's dosage and eventually get him off of the Amitriptyline? I didn't think to ask him about that. He may have to still be on the Amit, anyway. We don't know that, yet. I'll admit, I am not comfortable changing medications. Who knows if the next one will work? Or what side effects, including emotional can happen? How did we get into this world of pills? I feel like a drug pusher. He takes so many drugs, it makes me wonder if he needs all of this.

I wonder now that the girlfriend crisis is behind him, if we can just wean him off or lower the dose significantly. My son did need help at the time, and he did have a bout of depression 3 yrs. back, but he just went the counseling route, no meds.. I know he needs something, but now maybe we can try and see what it's like, lowered. I don't know. This whole thing makes me anxious, especially since he "supposed" to be going off to college in the fall. I don't think he ready. His doctor thinks he's doing fine. So does his therapist. They don't live with him though. My son can be crafty and convincing. His own therapist told me how manipulative my son can be. Son is so dependent on us to take his meds.. Even when I place the meds. in front of him, he sometimes forgets to take them. As independent as he can be, and as smart as he is, he still is very immature, not responsible or capable enough to be taking care of himself. I've shared this with his "help", and they look at me like I don't know what I'm talking about. I am trying to get him to be more independent. Guess we have to work on that more. If he didn't have all the other health issues, it wouldn't be so difficult. When my older son's sleep "schedule" is off, he may be tired, but he bounces right back. The next one....he is totally thrown off and has a headache for days or just gets sick. Can't imagine him on his own. I can see him sleeping all day and missing classes. Perhaps he'll surprise us. Here I go worrying, again. I am supposed to be taking "one day and one step at a time". That is my motto this year. Last year it was "and this, too, shall pass"... I like this years motto better. I must stick with it, however.

Guess I will get a better idea of what is what, once he has the blood test. Maybe I shouldn't think of it as worrying. Just thinking and preparing in case we don't need to make a change. That's it! I'm preparing. Even if his results are okay (i doubt it, however) this whole drug thing has started my wheels turning. Alternatives.

blaa, blaa, blaa...this was a long one... I think I feel better!

Hi you! There\'s really not much I can say to help you think this through...but I know you\'ll figure everything out! I tried stopping my meds but it wasn\'t good...just went back to the same ol way I was and it wasn\'t fun...but when I uped the dose a little bit back that wasn\'t good either...I got bad anxiety on that dose...so I went back to what I was used to and it seems to be fine...but every 3rd or 4th night I don\'t take it cuz I can feel myself bouncing off the walls. Didn\'t mean to write a book...I quess what I was trying to say was that it\'s always a hit and miss with meds and the dose...trial and error. I\'m glad he\'s getting the blood test...I\'m sure that\'ll help with your decision. Always thinking of you and your family!!

Hi mom of 3 - Hope this week is off to a good start for you. 3 soccer teams - wow! That is awesome! A great way to work off a lot of stress. Good for you!

As for your son\'s meds - have you talked with a pharmacist about the drug interactions? Sometimes they can offer a different perspective than the doctors. Not sure if it\'ll help, but might be worth a shot. I hope his blood tests go well, and know that I\'m with you working on this year\'s motto of \"one day and one step at a time\". :) Take good care, LH
