Boots

Boots,,,,the forgotten dog.  Before there was Kit,,,before there was Foxy,,,there was Boots.  He was my mom's dog.  He is the reason I live in a house and not in an apartment.  He was a total surprise to me.  I came home from work one day and Mom told me she was getting a puppy.  Our neighbor's dog had had a litter and they were close to being weaned.  The mother was a cocker spaniel.  The dad, who knows.  Mom was in her later years and I figured the puppy would give her companionship and something to do when I wasn't around.  Well, Boots' dad must have been a big dog because he grew to 3 times the size of his mom and didn't look anything like her.  He was tall with thin with patches of brown, tan, and black on white.  Very friendly, he soon became a little more than Mom could handle and stayed in the back yard while I was gone.  He loved both of us, but Mom was number one as it should be.  When I came home from bypass surgery, I could only play with him from the other side of the back yard fence until I got stronger.  When she died, I couldn't bring myself to put him in a shelter so I searched apartments for one that would allow dogs.  There were a few, but Boots was too big.  So I looked for a house with a fenced in back yard.  I found this house and we settled in and all went well until he found out he could go over the fence.  He had a name tag with my phone number on it and I got calls every time he got out.  At first, he was found just a couple of blocks away, but he kept getting farther and farther away.  He was shy to people he didn't know and it caused a situation one time when I got a call about him.  When I got to the house, the man who found him accused me of beating him.  He said Boots cowered every time someone came near him.  I assured the man that Boots had not been mistreated and it was proven when the minute he saw me came running to me, jumping up and down and licking me for all it was worth.  New Year's Day, Boots made his longest trip,,,about a mile and a half away.  When I arrived to pick him up, I told the lady who called me about the problems I been having with him running away.  The lady told me if I ever decided to give him up to call her and she gave me her number. She had a six foot tall wood fenced back yard that he couldn't get out of.  Sure enough, about a week later, he got out and I called the lady.  She was very happy when I brought him over.  I knew he'd have a good home.  About a month later, I met Foxy that started 14 years of shear joy.
