School

There are so many memories of school, especially elementary. It was my good luck or bad luck, never to go to an old school or old school building. From elementary school through high school, a new school or building opened. My classes kinda worked the “bugs” out of the school.
The two years before I started school were hectic for my family. My dad owned a grocery store and had to move it several miles from its original location because the city of Waco was building a new four lane road and it would go right through the store. My older sister, Sara, ten years older than me, was already in school. Vickie, my younger sister, was sixteen months younger than me. Dad found an old variety store building in Beverly Hills, a small town outside Waco. Our home, at the time was near the old location, but Dad wanted to move closer to the new store. We moved twice ending up in the two bedroom house that came with the store. The small house was cramped with Sara having her own bedroom, the idea being that since she was a teenager, she needed her privacy. As in the old house, Vickie and I shared my parents’ bedroom, again, sleeping in bunk beds. My parents decided to have a house built in a new housing development a few blocks off the new four lane road that had taken his store. The new house would be within walking distance of a new elementary school due to open when I started school. I would have to go to another school if we stayed in the old house and transfer at midterm to the new school. My parents got special permission from the school district to allow me to start in the new school since we would move into the new house in December. Crestview Elementary, the new school, was a good ways from our home in Beverly Hills. To get from the house to the school, my mom would have to drive a mile down the main street in Beverly Hills to a state highway; go down the highway for about two miles, crossing over a viaduct that went over railroad tracks; go down a gravel road for about a mile to the school. Remember these directions. They’ll come in handy later.
