Howdy!
(Note I originally wrote this journal entry for another journal of mine. Hence the beginning paragraph, but I wanted to share it here too.)
I am not sure how much I mention it, but I do suffer from clinical depression. It is something I have learned to cope with. It does affect my life and what I do though and one of the things I do is write. Often it only moderately affects my correspondence and perhaps to a slightly greater extent my journal writing and forum participation. But it does greatly effect my other writing.
I mention this now because I started writing another novel last June the day before my birthday on the 18th. I got a fair amount of work done on it blocking out the plot and an outline and considering the setting and main character. I also had a good idea on the overall feeling of the novel. However not too long after my birthday my depression deepened and I have been blocked and nearly unable to write a thing on the book. Some ideas did come to me but I wasn't really able to get them down.
For that matter life slowed down to a crawl.
However talking with my Doctor we changed my treatment a bit and things seemed to have improved significantly and I am pleased to report that I have been able to get back to writing again! It came to me as I was finally able to get out to do some of the chores I hadn't been able to get around to out and about the town and on the bus I was able to sit and ponder the plot, character, setting and story. The ideas started to come once more and flow. Then once more when I had a few minutes here and there I was able to work on the novel in my head. It was very constructive and when I got home I was able to put my thoughts down on my computer.
Last night I had a very productive night's work writing and was up again this morning!
I am happy for more reasons than the obvious. I was excited about this story idea when I had it and those friends whom I have shared the story idea with could feel my excitement with the story and shared in it. It is a story that I want to share with others. It is a fantasy novel and no great work of prose or academic tome – but it is a story I think that many will enjoy and they won't be able to until I get it written and get someone to publish it. That shan't happen unless I get it typed out and finished will it.
Anyway, I just wanted to share that tidbit!
Oh! I have two working titles for it - “Skyfall” and “Falling”. Somehow I think I recall a science fiction story or novel by the first name. I rather prefer “Falling” though, but of course, it might be taken.
I should get back to the writing!

yep,, that\'s good about your depresion.. and i didn\'t realize about the writing.. you published many books??
I write too...and have had a block for a long time...depression is clinical for me too, hospitalized once for 11 days back in 1991...some writers can write from depressive state..me, i am a sleeper, withdrawn person...who has little motivation and inspiration...i miss writing...it is stated by the best writers to make time everyday and write something..must discipline yourself, they say...that\'s tough in the thros of depression...from one writer to another...I completely understand! xo deb
keep up your writing done ever give up on the passions of you life...debbie
I get writers block too. It passes, you are so fascinating Darrell. Inspite of having depression you are more stable then most people that have problems and do not seek help. I would love to get a copy of your book when you have it published. Im sure it is going to be terrific.
I have different sorts of depression. With some I can write and write. Poetry flows out of my fingers even when I am just writing prose. Other times I will go for years, like over 5 years without writing a single rhyme. The same goes for fiction.
Motivation is a VERY big problem for me. I really don\'t think people understand how big. But I work to cope. I try to arrange things so that it is not an issue.
Anyway I can not wait to share the books I have within me. I just need a prompter to help me get them out. I almost have the money saved for the laptop computer now too so that I can write in different environments!
No books published yet. But I hope next year. I am working to having my first novel finished before Christmas. Perhaps a collection of short stories in the meantime or the following 6 months.
We have to have some sort of plan or time table, right?
