(This first bit I started as comment to an entry Scratch's Journal, but I wanted to include it in my own journal as it segues into a bit about me and my Dad.)

Grafting has always been of interest to me from when I came across it in my Cub manual... or was it my Scout one. Of course they didn't go much into why, mostly how you would cut a branch and how you would bind it for a good graft. My Dad though he would listen to the nursery man and though perhaps he didn't realize it I would listen to Dad and the nursery man too. I was the quiet child who stood politely with the adults seen and not heard, taking it all in.
So I was also there when Dad would plant the shrubs and trees. I would be there when it would get dry and Dad would make sure the tame trees would get a good drink even if perhaps the lawns weren't being watered as often as he would prefer. Of course I hated watering. But that was my OCD and problems with getting my hands mucky and my arthritis making my hands sore from the cold water running in the hose.
But I learned that you couldn't just have one pear tree of one type and that you should have a number of varieties of blueberry bushes. I learned that if I was going to have strawberries I was going to make a stepped terraced planter of some sort so I wouldn't have to risk so many slugs or spiders picking the berries and it would be easier to keep'em off the ground...
