I thought it was about time I shared another one of my poems with you all as I've also had a request smiley-smile.gif This poem was written for a contest in which I came runner up. It wasn't for anything special, just on a website. We was given the title heartbeat as it was near valentines day.

Heartbeat

Just born her pulse is strong and steady,
But then a pause, is life over already?
Ten, twenty, thirty seconds gone,
How much longer can this nightmare carry on?
With the help of the midwife it starts again,
Just in time, but will it still be the same?

Five years on she’s started school,
Already known as the class’ fool.
Different from them will she ever fit in?
It wasn’t her fault that her heart gave in.
All they needed was half a minute,
To judge her, hate her and haunt her with it.

She’s found a man it’s thirty years now,
Has a boy and a girl, but still wonders how?
Rejected through life but happy at last,
She’s loved for who she is despite her past.
Who would think such a fragile pulsation,
Could change your life or give an abrupt cessation?

Her husband lays beside her still in deep sleep,
While his wife’s mortal fate is causing her to weep,
Eighty years now she’s come a long way,
But now the light is fading as her life slips away.
The breathing’s now laboured and the rhythm is slowing,
The heartbeat stops and the blood stops flowing.
