I changed my profile picture today to one of my favorite pictures of Bernie. It was taken by me on the birthday of our only grandchild. It was one of the best days of our lives. We had woken up to the news that our daughter thought she had gone into labor- and had gone to the hospital overnight and they had sent her home- telling her to call them if the contractions got closer. I was super excited- but my feelings were also a little hurt that she didn't call for us to go to the hospital with her. After talking to her, I decided to go to work. Bernie dropped me off. He didn't tell me his plan- but he went back and sat with Megan the whole time I was at work. Megan's significant other had left her at home alone because he had a back ache and he went to his mother's house so she could help him feel better. (Just a glimpse into the kind of future father he would become.)
Within a couple hours of my arrival back to Megan's house, just the three of us went to the hospital. In less than 30 minutes of our arrival, our princess, Delilah, was born. Her dad, her other grandma, and my sister barely made it in time to hear Delilah's first cry. Grandpa Bernie cried tears of joy. Delilah had Grandpa wrapped around her little finger from day one. She would climb up on his lap and sit and watch an entire KC Chiefs game with him before she was even a year old. He sang some of his favorite rock songs to her, (Grandpa didn't know any lullabies.). He so cherished her- and it is heartbreaking that she will never remember how much she was loved. I will tell her- if I am still around to do so- but she'll not remember herself.
If I can't have him back for me- I sure wish I could have him back for her.
