23-25 JULY 2014 - MOM

WEDNESDAY.23 JULY 2014 - Attended Mom's second's care plan meeting this year - the main concern at this time is her weight loss...she has gone from her incoming weight of 120 lbs back in Sept to her current weight of 101 lbs ...despite working with Speech therapy since May, and finally being upgraded from a puree diet (YUCK) to a mechanical soft diet...she is still not eating enough to maintain a healthy caloric intake...this puts her at a much higher risk for skin breakdown and infection...she has already had multiple urinary track infections this year and just got over a facial gland infection this month...As a result we were basically given 3 options at this time:
Option 1: A gastrointestinal tube which would require surgery under anesthesia...Option 2. Hospice careOption 3. Palliative care
Because of her advanced age and because of the difficulty with her last surgery almost a year ago, Option 1, the GI tube through which they could feed her is NOT really an option for us...so basically that just leaves Hospice care or Palliative care

FRIDAY. 25 JULY 2014 - We met with Brian and Deb Bradly about Hospice Services - after much discussion about Mom's life, strength, resilience, and feistiness we elected to go ahead with Hospice services because she has earned the right to go Home in Peace and Dignity.
