8/18/07I had a little bit of a night on the town last night. It seems a Korean lady who is a chaplain intern at the hospital where Julie also does her chaplain intern work has a daughter who attends Julliard (sp?)in New york. the young lady is a very talented cellist. the whole family is moving to New york. As a nice going away present to their friends at their church and the hospital they set up a performance by their daughter accompanied by another Julliard student on piano. the two young people were remarkably talented and their performance was flawless. Long haired music is not my cup of tea but it was fun watching these two play with passion and verve. It was also great to see her mother beaming with pride.Although their playing seemed effortless, Julie tells me that the girl practices on her cello 8 hours daily. Now that's dedication.After the performance we went to a restaurant/bar for a drink and something to eat. While there I noticed a young couple at another table. It seemed as if they were on a set up date. It did not appear to be going well. the girl was dressed up quite a bit and the guy...well he was in a t shirt, jean shorts and sandals. He frequently left the table and spoke with other friends, leaving her alone. She did not look happy.When he did return the silence was not only awkward ...it was like a wall between them. I should not have watched but it was fascinating..and I am a people watcher(nosy?). Believe it or not the evening was saved for them by their cell phones. they each called someone (probably the friends who set them up) and after talking for a while on the phone they finally began talking to each other. Once the ice was broken, they got along famously. their budding romance (or at least their evening) was saved. It did make me think that I'm sure glad I'm too old for that stuff. I like all kinds of music, from classical to bluegrass. You have a nice life, to hear you tell it. Everything sounds so pleasant. Except for the asthma. I wouldn\'t be comfortable in the social situations that come so easily to you. What kind of music do you like? Good old rock and roll is my favorite and blugrass runs a close second.
Dating, what a horrible thought! I never had time to date much. I was too busy raising babies, don\'t you know.
Are you going to get into a hobby or something, now that you\'ve retired?
Well, I\'m still working on a hobby. Baseball was one idea but until I can tolerate the heat better that is not an option. Maybe I\'ll see what the local VFW does and, if it seems interesting, rejoin that group. I wouldn\'t be able to help much with their deep fryers during fish fries and the like but maybe they do other things. We\'ll see.
As for music, I like a bit of it all. I even like some classical but four movements to each piece is a bit much. (Short attention span?) Only things that I can\'t take are Peking Opera and hip hop/rap. I saw a lot of what we called Peking Opera while overseas. Lots of pageantry and wonderful costumes but what a gosh awful racket! It is definitely an acquired taste!
Hip hop/rap I just find boring. to my untrained ear it all sounds the same...bad.
I\'ve recently developed a taste for country music because that is one area where they still sing a song.
