8/12/2007103 degrees? you've gotta be kidding me! Someone stick a fork in us please...we're done. It's so hot that I think I saw a family of gila monsters moving in out back...they said Arizona was a little cool and they wanted to go somewhere to warm up. Personally I may have to go to the gym and use the sauna to cool off.I stayed home, firmly planted in the air conditioning and watched the ball game. I really felt sorry for the players. the thermometer at field level showed that it was 120 degrees on the field. Whoa...I admire their dedication. It might be understandable though. the minimum salary for a major leaguer is $400.000 a year. Most of them make much more. Pretty strong motivation. When I was still playing baseball as a young man in the 70's, I remember we wound up playing a double header in 102 degree heat. Back then it was thought that replacing the salt lost to perspiration was the key to playing in the heat ..so all of the teams had a big jar of salt tablets. Players were expected to take a couple of them at game time. Not a real good idea. thank goodness for gatorade. yet, the fact that we played on in the face of these conditions said a lot about us... that we were dedicated? Nooo...it said that we were crazy! (My wife interjected that we were all in our 20's then and now we're ...a litte older. She thinks that may have changed my perspective. I like to think I'm just not as crazy anymore.)Oh well, as the Midwest continues to bake I'll close with the words of John Sebastian and the Lovin' Spoonful. It's been a "Hot town..Summer in the City"Be cool, tom
