6/20/200Boy, am I tired. I have just got home from work and I am beat. the job seems to take more out of me each day. Everyday lately we seem to get some feisty drunk who wants to act out. What are all these people doing boozing it up in the middle of the week. (It's tuesday folks....gimme a break.)Last night it was a small young woman. She had beeen brought in on a DWI charge and was royally drunk....and, of course, she was a mean drunk. She refused to cooperate and began striking the officers. As a result she was pepper sprayed. I wound up having to avoid the area with the lingering pepper spray the rest of the night. It wasn't easy but I was mostly successful. I am doing what I can to avoid another trip to the ER. She continued to be very loud and disruptive for several hours after this, even in her private cell. When it came time to release her she nearly assaulted her boy friend in the lobby. Lucky she was small because she meant to hurt him but just wasn't strong enough. He was able to guide her patiently into his car and hopefully take her home where she can sleep it off. She lists her occupation as being a nurse. I'm sure when she's not drunk she is probably a lovely person and very good at her job. I just wish she could see how the alcohol affects her. I have seen where some agencies videotape the behavior of drunks and the judge makes them watch it as a condition of their sentence. I think that is a great idea. Maybe it would discourage further excessive drinking in at least some of them. One of the officers on duty last night said "Captain, aren't you going to miss all this?" Of course he was kidding.(I think) It does make regret and maudlin sentimentality less likely on my departure. Only 7 more shfts but who is counting?Be well, tom

That was unpleasant for you, I know. It\'s good that your time is so short. What will you do with yourself without the drunks and felons you enjoy every night. Seriuosly, what are you going to do when you retire. I know you kidded once about coaching baseball-or were you kidding? Will you become a day person?
I think that initially my main focus is to see if I still have limitations in my activities due to asthma. I\'m going to concentrate on getting stronger. My wife, who already is retired with a pension, plans to get a job and return to work. I\'ll try to keep the house up in an amazing example of role reversal. If I feel better, as I fully expect to, I may coach baeball. I have done it in the past with adult and kids teams for about 12 years. It won\'t be a source of revenue but it is something I like to do.
My first job though is to get better.
