2019 Tasmania Chardonnay
Capture the distinctive cool-climate flavours and nature of Tasmania with this fresh and vibrant chardonnay. 2018 Dalrymple Cave Block Chardonnay, A$38, gained top points from Bourne, who described, “Buoyant perfumes of white peach, grapefruit and lemon zest. The wine’s showing a little development and will be at its best over the next couple of years.
The state-wide crop has ranged from a high of 17,180 tonnes – about 1.24 million dozen – in 2017 to 12,308 tonnes in 2020. The trend line is consistently increasing, however, with the rapid planting of more vineyards sorrenberg chardonnay as demand grows. Was quick to find attention, curiously for cabernet sauvignon and riesling initially, but it was not long before interest in chardonnay swelled, for both sparkling and table wines.
Our Chardonnay is a fresh modern Australian style, citrus driven and complemented by the subtle use of oak. The oak component is unobtrusive yet critical to the overall aroma and texture. Perfumed aromas of blossom, jasmine, candy apple, and wet stone emanate with subtle hints of beeswax, nashi pear and green apple following through on the palate. Concentrated acid, persistent length, and a lean profile. White peach, mandarin orange and apricot are delivered with a core of minerality that makes this dry Riesling shimmer with energy and freshness.
These are the wines we have made in the past, but they have been discontinued because we have sold out of them. One might be surprised to know, Chardonnay is the most important component of the world-famous Champagne sparkling wine, thus making France the largest producer of this grape variety. Over the years, Australia has also gained a position in the list of premium Chardonnay wine producers globally. The labels each feature a unique photographed object collected from the region the wine was grown, designed to present a story of the region's distinct characteristics. Pronounced black fruits were a feature of the cabernets the panel sampled.
In contrast to record warm temperatures in December and January, February saw a cool change. This allowed fantastic retention of acidity in the fruit. We had below average rainfall throughout the season, which meant disease pressure was non-existent, allowing us to take our time as the fruit ripened, and harvest only as it reached perfection. Crop levels were just below forecast giving us excellent depth of flavour. Coupled with near-perfect balance and racy acidity, a winemaker couldn’t ask for better material. Making wines from this year’s fruit has been an absolute privilege.
The palate’s fine, with good flow through to the long finish. Byrne thought it, “Super-bright, with white flowers and light mineral. Lightly funked, with nice texture and tons of power.” It’s good to see that one of the great Tasmanian pioneers is back on song with this wine. Partial malolactic fermentation and 10 months of lees stirring are an integral part of crafting this wine. Delamere Estate Chardonnay 2019 Opens with pristine citrus, floral and stone fruit notes, this wine evolves with delicate shades of vanilla, almond and crème brûlée. This is a leaner style Chardonnay, reflecting its Tasmanian provenance, it has juicy lemon and fine white peach fruit notes and mouth-watering acidity.
Lost Farm Chardonnay is a complex and elegant Chardonnay that shows white peach, melon and subtle oak with a creaminess and texture that is all linked together with vibrant acidity. What struck me was the few times my notes mentioned oak. A few 2020 wines showed tropical notes and appeared to be ageing quickly, probably the result of late rain. Overall, however, the freshness, finesse and intensity of the wines was excellent. The light golden hues hint at the time this wine has received in just 2 specially selected French Oak barrels.
Select parcels were fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to retain fragrance and flavour. Following fermentation, approximately 50% of the wine was transferred to neutral French oak for a short time to subtly build savoury and textural complexity. Straw in colour with a slight bronze tinge, the nose opens with lively aromas of pear and green apple, with floral scents of rosewater and honeysuckle together with spicy notes.
Pooley Estate Riesling 2020 Colour is pale white with green hue. Initially the nose is a little shy with notes of jasmine and orange blossom. The palate is more flamboyant (reminiscent of Butcher’s Hill) with notes of lime zest, red apples and green melon. Very beautiful pale gold color with soft green reflections.
