The wines are matured in the finest quality new French Oak for at least ten months before being bottled and laid to rest until the flavours develop. Situated close to the Kreglinger wine estate in northern Tasmania, Ninth Island is often covered by ocean mists. This range of fresh and early drinking wines is named after the island for its distinctive cool climate flavours, and production without the use of oak. 2019 Pipers Brook Vineyard Chardonnay, A$45, starts with a delicate nose of white nectarine and subtle oak, but this barely prepares you for the fabulously intense flavours.
The state-wide crop has ranged from a high of 17,180 tonnes – about 1.24 million dozen – in 2017 to 12,308 tonnes in 2020. Select parcels were fermented separately in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks to retain fragrance and flavour. Following fermentation, approximately 50% of the wine was transferred to neutral French oak for a short time to subtly build savoury and textural complexity.
