The 1998 Meursault Village is surprisingly backward and reticent on the nose, eventually revealing scents of cockleshell, popcorn and almond with time, perhaps slightly more tertiary than the ’99 tasted alongside. The palate is nicely balanced with citrus lemon, orange zest and a touch of walnut.
A 1992 Coche Meursault Chevalieres village and a Ramonet Chassagne Morgeot 1993 were together in a flight with a completely forgettable Prosper Maufoux Batard-Montrachet as the third wheel. The first time penfolds v chardonnay I tasted Coche-Dury was in 1995, with Danish wine friends and some rather colourful wine people and entrepreneurs. I could now recite the usual Coche estate history and its glorious wines, but I won’t.
With its combination of grace and fortitude, the 2018 Meursault Caillerets from Domaine Coche-Dury champion this ethos superbly. The Wine Experience It's not just an asset, it's an experience. For enthusiasts and collectors alike, these vintages are not just beverages but treasures that encapsulate the rich history and terroir of Burgundy. The 1989 vintage from Coche-Dury stands out as a particularly rare gem in the world of fine wines. This year marked a significant turning point due to the exceptional weather conditions that prevailed in Burgundy, leading to an optimal ripening of grapes.
This vintage is celebrated for its exceptional balance and depth, featuring a complex bouquet of aromas ranging from ripe citrus to toasted nuts. Its aging potential is notable, with many experts suggesting that the wine has not yet reached its peak, promising further development of flavors and aromas over time. The 1992 vintage from Coche-Dury stands out as a legendary year, particularly for its Meursault wines. This exceptional vintage is highly sought after by collectors and wine enthusiasts alike, due to its remarkable balance and depth. The climatic conditions of 1992 provided the perfect environment for the grapes, leading to a harvest that was both abundant and of high quality.
He began his career in the 1960's, lending a hand to his father at the family estate, in Meursault, in the Côte de Beaune. In 1973, he inherited the domain, with its 10,5 hectares of grapevines and many appellations, and got to work. The wine lover revealed himself to be a wine genius, constantly reaching for perfection.
This one comes from Les Chaumes, the vines rented from the commune of Meursault. It offers a pale fresh colour, really tight, even a little bit of sandalwood, quite juicy yet with tension, and not too much reduction. Gunflint, popcorn, yellow stone fruit, and crisp minerals. Regal and balanced, definitely exceeding the expectation of the 2018 vintage. The original Coche-Dury plot was rented from either 1985 or 1986. But the Coche Meursault Chevalieres 1992 – my first Coche – was brilliant, taking Meursault to previously unseen levels for the then-relatively-inexperienced Winehog.
A slightly riper and darker fruited nose is comprised by notes of cassis, black cherry and subtle spice and earth nuances. Here too there is excellent richness to the finer if not quite as dense flavors that are shaped by moderately firm tannins on the complex and sneaky long finish. The 2018 Meursault Village Rouge offers copious aromas of red cherry and blueberry fruit, cranberry jus and touches of rose petal.
As seen from the table the vines in several vineyards of very old, and this is perhaps one explanation for the extraordinary quality Coche achieve. Coche-Dury put great emphasis on work done in the vineyards, when he is asked about his fantastic succes. There a no secrets he says, just hard work in the vineyards.
