Just finished watching August in Osage County while cleaning. My sleep schedule is just outright broken so I figured I might as well make use of the time, at least.

Gotta say - seriously effed up movie. It was like watching my own family of origin on screen. I am glad I watched it alone. Some parts where I laughed I know it was inappropriate to laugh - except what else can you do but laugh when shit is so broken? You laugh or you break.

I related so intimately with the Barbara character. She is hard and relentless and gets things done but all the while judging others and being so critical of them rather than looking at her own faults. Her husband cheats on her with someone younger and prettier and, I would assume, not as emotionally distant. Well, yeah. It's not so easy to be emotionally available when you have to be a leaning post for everyone else. It's easy not so easy when everything is about everyone else.

When Barbara does keep her mouth shut about the stupidity of people around her, it's to their detriment, but it's what they want. Boy, can I relate that. And when the focus is finally turned back to her and her problems for a brief moment, she just let it all slide back to everyone else - because that's what you do. You don't let the focus stay on you because you have to suck it up and be ok for everyone else. No. Matter. What.

Meh.

Broke is broke no matter where the sharp edges cut.
