2010 A Crazy Year
The UC got worse and worse to the point where I couldnt keep track of how many bowel movements per day I was having. Way over 30. There was definitely something out of the ordinary going on and I decided to try to find out what parasite was causing this.
I got sick during one really hot humid summer day and came down with a bacterial infection of the chest, where I was coughing up green goo. Doctor prescribed Cipro and oddly enough, my UC symptoms cleared up, slightly. I still had to go constantly to the bathroom, but some of the other symptoms like pain and discomfort were reduced significantly.
Then we tried Cipro and Metronidazole on alternating weeks, one antibiotic one week, another the next. I did this for 6 weeks. I was weak and exhausted, and lost a ton of weight. I was drinking Glutamine and protein shakes (EAS nutritional shakes) and this seemed to help with the ulcers.
After about a week of recovering and taking massive amounts of probiotics, I had a month where the UC had reverted to its beginning stages again. This isnt to say that I fully went into remission but a lot of my energy was back and I had reduced symptoms.
After that month, the symptoms came back with a vengence. Apparently, killing off all the bacteria was a double edged sword. The good bacteria, as well as the bad bacteria were wiped out. I threw every supplement I could at it but the diarrhea persisted along with the bleeding.
I read a book recently that pondered the theory of increasing escalation with microbes. The more we attack them, the more they have to adapt and the more dangerous they become. If we were to try to coexist with them, and make an environment that they are comfortable in, then they could possibly become less virulent.
I remember back to just before I got UC, I had taken Omnicef a couple times, which is a very potent antibiotic. Its a wide spectrum third generation cephalosporin.
